Afternoon planting and generator check
Kevin is at the cottage checking the generator float switch and pump cycle; Jenny is on the north ridge continuing to sow grandmother's heirloom seeds.
Kevin sits on the porch step in the heavy 32°C heat, watching the southern horizon. He has finished his limet broth and left the mug to dry, waiting for the supply boat in three days. Jenny has just finished planting the heirloom seeds on the north ridge, wiping sweat from her brow as she begins the descent back to the cottage under the grey clouds gather.
You lift the generator shed door and crouch by the fuel tank, the float switch mechanism exposed. The pump cycles clean when you lift the float by hand — no stick, no hesitation. You watch it run through two full cycles, fuel returning clear to the tank.
Kevin — walk back to the cottage, set the pot of limpets on the stove to boil.

Kevin — ladle limpets and broth into a tin mug, eat standing at the stove.

Kevin — rinse the mug, set it upside down on the draining board. Walk to the porch and sit on the step, elbows on knees, looking south.

You open the next packet — tomato, the seeds dark and dry — and move up the bench to the second trench line. The soil takes the seeds easily, crumbling between your fingers, and you firm each row with the flat of your hand as you go.
Jenny — wipe sweat from my brow with a forearm and look toward the dark clouds on the horizon.

Almost there, Jenny.
quickly pat the last of the soil over the seeds and stand up, brushing dirt from my knees.

Jenny — tuck the trowel into my belt and start the descent back toward the cottage.
