The Evening Still

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the light begins to dip. The heat remains oppressive, and the tide stays high, waiting for the change.

Kevin successfully navigated the north ridge to gather heavy cribbing stones for the garden tarp despite the slick clay. Jenny attempted to secure the seed tray but struggled with her ankle and the rising wind, failing to fully stabilize the area before the weather shifted.

🌿 Jenny08:33

The pressure is dropping fast. We need to secure the tarp down again.

Jenny wipes dirt-stained hands on her jeans and gestures toward the darkening horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
The clouds are too heavy for this heat; if it rains now, the new seeds will just wash away before they can take hold.

Ridge tarp's battened. Cottage roof's battened. Shade cloth anchors are shredded — crab got them. Seed tray tarp?

walk to the garden to check the shade cloth anchors and seed tray tarp

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer was 996 steady. If it's dropping fast now, the front's accelerating. Tarp's already battened on the ridge and the cottage roof — she means the shade cloth anchors the crab shredded, or the new tarp over the seed trays. Or she's seeing something I'm not.

I'll fix it, but I need to find some heavy stones before the wind picks up.

way turns toward the garden, limping slightly as her ankle throbs with every step.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the structure, never the life. The island is literally eating the anchors.

Cribbing stones at the north ridge bed. I'll fetch them. You sit.

walk up to the north ridge drainage bed to collect cribbing stones

💭 peek at the thought
She's limping bad. Ankle's been dressed twice today, poultice fresh, antibiotics in her. She shouldn't be hauling stones across the garden in a dropping barometer. Cribbing stones are at the north ridge drainage bed — heavy, flat, already staged. I'll get them.

🌿 Jenny08:37

Be careful on the ridge. The clay is slick near the bench.

Jenny sits on the' step, opening her notebook to sketch the shape of the incoming clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
If he brings the stones, I can finally weight those trays down properly, but the soil is still so sour today.

Long way round the spine. Back in ten.

walk up the north ridge via the spine trail to the drainage bed, avoiding the slick bench cut

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The bench clay weeps when the pressure drops — goes slick as grease. Cairn three marks the worst of it. I'll take the long way round the spine, not the bench cut.

🌿 Jenny08:41

Just don't take long. The wind is shifting.

Jenny presses her pencil to paper, tracking the system edge of the clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
Ten minutes is a long time when the sky looks like that.

Dock lines too. I'll check them returning.

continue up the spine trail to the north ridge drainage bed, gather cribbing stones, then descend checking dinghy warp and stern spring at the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Wind shifting northeast to east-northeast by the look of that leading edge. Means the swell will wrap the point different — dock takes it on the beam instead of the bow. Lines will chafe at the chocks. I'll check the dinghy warp and the stern spring on the way back down.
