A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin and Jenny ate a tin of corned beef at the cottage table while the humidity hung heavy. Jenny managed the swelling in her ankle with a poultice while Kevin checked the barometer for signs of the approaching season rain.

🔧 Kevin04:16

Put the kettle on. You want the last of the corned beef in yours?

walk to the wood stove, fill kettle from tank tap, set it on the hot plate, pull two tin mugs from the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
The cottage feels smaller with both of us inside. Rain's hammering the roof steady now. My hands still smell like diesel and salt from the Yanmar run. Need to check that trap in the pantry — heard it snap hours ago. Jenny's at the table with her notebook, fingers stiff. She won't ask for help with the seed inventory. I'll make tea first. Something normal.

🌿 Jenny04:17

Yeah. If it's warm.

sit at the kitchen table, rubbing my swollen ankle, and watch the water start to steam.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry my hands are shaking, but the smell of that tin is making me sick.

🔧 Kevin04:18

Kevin — pull the tin opener from the drawer, punch the lid on the first corned beef tin, tip the fat into the cast iron skillet warming on the stove edge, spoon the meat in after it

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the ankle still. Swelling's down from yesterday but the skin's shiny tight. She won't stay off it. The corned beef tin sits on the counter — six from the crate, labels faded but seals intact. Good protein. Salt's what we need with this heat.

🌿 Jenny04:19

Be careful, the fat spits.

reach for my notebook and start a quick, gestural drawing of the way the artwork is curling over the kettle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so methodical with the skillet, like it'll fix the whole island.

🔧 Kevin04:20

Fat's hot. Meat's browning.

stir the corned beef with the wooden spoon, scrape the crust forming on the skillet bottom, crack the tin mugs with a splash of coffee each while the water comes up

💭 peek at the thought
She's drawing the steam curls. Always noticing the small things. The fat pops sharp in the pan — hot enough. Good. The meat browns at the edges. Six tins total. Three for us, three for the ditch bag if the boat ever comes. Her ankle's propped on the chair rung. Should've made her stay in bed but she'd have fought me. Stubborn as the Yanmar's old vibration.

🌿 Jenny04:23

Smells good.

lean back in the chair, watching the steam rise from the mugs, waiting for the kettle to whistle.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can just get some protein, I might have the energy to face the slope tomorrow.

🔧 Kevin04:23

It's done.

spoon corned beef into two tin mugs, pour the hot fat over top, carry one to the table and set it by her notebook, sit opposite with my own mug

💭 peek at the thought
Kettle's singing low. Steam thick in the kitchen. She looks tired — the kind that sits behind the eyes. Thirteen months on this rock and the garden's still half weeds. I said I'd build her a sensory garden. Never did. The corned beef smells rich, salty, real. We'll eat hot food and drink hot coffee and the rain'll keep falling and the boat won't come for three days minimum. Harbourmaster's voice on the radio: six metre swell. He didn't lie this time.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:25

Thanks.

pick up the spoon and take a small bite of the beef, the salt hitting my tongue.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry I can barely breathe, but the silence is already heavy.

🔧 Kevin04:25

Kevin — eat the corned beef straight from the mug, spoon scraping tin, wash it down with bitter coffee, set the empty mug down hard

💭 peek at the thought
Salt and fat and hot meat. First real flavour in days. The coffee's bitter behind it, good. She's eating slow — ankle throbbing or just the usual quiet. I watch her hands on the spoon. Knuckles swollen. The infection took more than skin. Barometer's steady at 975. Wind northeast. Boat's not coming. We have rice for twelve days, three tins mackerel, salt down to the last kilo. Diesel in the emergency drums if the injectors hold. I can keep engines alive. Can't make her stay.

🌿 Jenny04:27

Jenny — eat slowly, focusing on the texture of the meat, avoiding the sound of the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
He eats like he's trying to finish the day faster.
