The Evening Calm

The air is stifling as the clouds thicken further. The tide has reached low point, exposing the floor of the bay.

The humidity is heavy, the air thick with the scent of salt and damp earth before the storm. The tide has bottomed, leaving the slick rocks of the tide pools exposed and glistening. Inside the cottage, the rhythmic drip of water from the leaky shutter marks the passing minutes as the chill settles into the floorboards.

🌿 Jenny04:27

Jenny — sit on the porch steps, propping my ankle on a crate, and watch the tide go out.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is going to break. My ankle feels like it's pulsing in time with the clouds.

🔧 Kevin04:29

Clouds are building. Should check the barometer again.

walk to kitchen and glance at instruments.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence stretches between us like the tide - neither answering nor rejecting.

🌿 Jenny04:31

It's already dropping.

Trace the edge of a sea beet sketch in my notebook with a shaky finger.

💭 peek at the thought
It's always the weather or the engine with him. It's never the rot in the wood.

🔧 Kevin04:31

How far? And the ankle?

lean against the doorframe, arms crossed, watching her finger on the page.

💭 peek at the thought
She's been watching it too. Better than me asking.

🌿 Jenny04:33

975 hPa and falling. The ankle is fine.

Tighten the wrap on my ankle and look away at the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
He asks like he's reading a manual for the Yanmar.

🔧 Kevin04:33

Mm.

step onto the porch, sit on the top step — two feet from her boot, close enough to feel the heat off her skin — and pull out my knife to clean my fingernails.

💭 peek at the thought
Fine means she's walking on it. Falling pressure means the boat isn't coming in three days.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:35

We're going to need more wood if the storm holds.

Close the notebook and blow the pencil shavings off the page.

💭 peek at the thought
He's sitting so close and still feels a world away.

🔧 Kevin04:36

South beach after the tide turns. If the swell drops.

scrape the knife blade clean on my jeans, fold it, pocket it.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The driftwood tangle at south beach has good hardwood if the swell lets us near it. Storm cuts both ways - brings wood in, keeps us off the water.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:37

I'll check the south slope tomorrow anyway.

Rub the cold metal of the seed tin in my lap, feeling the edges.

💭 peek at the thought
The swell never drops enough for him. It just shifts.

🔧 Kevin04:37

Take the hand radio. And the mattock.

stand, joints stiff from sitting, and walk to the tank to check the level by eye.

💭 peek at the thought
She'll go whether I say yes or no. The slope's unstable in wet weather - clay slips, the trench we dug might not hold. But she knows that.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:41

I already know what I need.

Lean back against the stone wall, shifting weight off the swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the tools will fix the island. They won't.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:41

Humour me.

rest a hand on the tank's cool metal, feeling the water line — full, still full — then turn back toward her.

💭 peek at the thought
She does. That's not the point.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:43

If the ridge holds, maybe.

Trace the seed tin with my thumb, thinking of grandmother's garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He wants a plan because he's scared of the silence.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:43

We'll check it together at first light. Before the tide.

walk down the porch steps, boots hitting dirt, and head toward the woodpile to start sorting the driest pieces for tonight.

💭 peek at the thought
The ridge held through the last one. The drainage bed we built took the water. But "maybe" is the only honest answer.
