A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin spends the evening splitting spruce logs for fuel and future use while the humid air hangs heavy. Jenny attempts to scout the south slope for drainage opportunities, but her swollen ankle makes the terrain difficult and she makes very little progress.

Water on?

set the kettle on the wood stove, then move to the radio shelf and switch the shortwave to receive

💭 peek at the thought
The cottage feels smaller than it did this morning. Salt grit under my boots, the radio's low hiss, Jenny's cane leaning by the porch door. She's quiet — tired quiet, not angry quiet. The ankle's the anchor now. Every decision runs through it.

way. Please.

sit on the kitchen bench, propping my leg up on a crate.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the kettle whistle. I need to sit before I fall over.

🔧 Kevin05:39

Kevin — fill the kettle from the tank tap, set it on the stove top, and pull out the tin mugs while it heats

💭 peek at the thought
She doesn't ask. Just states what she needs. The crate scrapes the floorboards — she's done this enough times to know the height.

🌿 Jenny05:41

Jenny — reach for my notebook and pencil to sketch the morphology of the sea beet I found earlier.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so quiet when he's focused on the radio. The silence between us is heavy today.

🔧 Kevin05:41

Kevin — pour hot water into the two mugs, set one on the bench beside her notebook, keep the other

💭 peek at the thought
Pencil moves before the kettle sings. She's mapping the gland density on a scrap page — same hand that traced the dock rot, the ridge beds, the cave strata. Doesn't waste lines.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:43

thanks.

wrap both hands around the mug, letting the heat sink into my palms.

💭 peek at the thought
The tea is warm, but the air is still cold. I'm so tired of this constant ache.

🔧 Kevin05:43

Kevin — blow across my mug, then take a sip, watching the notebook page fill

💭 peek at the thought
Steam rises between us. The mug warms my fingers too. Radio static hums low on the shelf — Tom's frequency, supply boat frequency, 2182. All quiet.

🌿 Jenny05:45

Is the boat still on schedule?

press the pencil down on the paper, shading the

💭 peek at the thought
He's watching me draw. He probably thinks I'm wasting time instead of fixing the dock, but I need to see how these cells structure.

🔧 Kevin05:46

Four days at best. Five more likely. Harbourmaster's voice cracked on the 0800 sched.

set my mug down, pull the radio log notebook from the shelf, flip to today's page

💭 peek at the thought
The question hangs in the steam. Harbourmaster said four days minimum, five more likely. That was this morning. Barometer's rising but the northeast swell holds. I told her at breakfast. She was stirring tea then too.

🌿 Jenny05:47

We need to check the supplies in the shed again.

stop the sketch and look at the swelling on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
Five days. If the boat doesn't come, the antibiotic cream for this ankle will run out.

🔧 Kevin05:47

Three tins mackerel. Rice for eleven days. Salt's the real clock.

stand, stretch my shoulders, head for the porch door to the shed

💭 peek at the thought
She's counting. Rice, mackerel, salt, coffee, antibiotics. The crate gave us corned beef and rope but no flour, no sugar, no fuel drums. She's looking at my ankle like it's a gauge for something else — how far I can carry, how long I can work the dock, whether the dinghy's an option if the boat doesn't show.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:49

I'll check the salt-cell stock too.

step onto the porch, leaning heavily on the doorframe.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always right about the numbers. I hate how the clock is ticking in my skin.
