Evening Meal Prep

Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the first heavy of thunder echoes faintly in the distance.

Kevin replaced the radio coax and drove a new ground rod at the mast base while a storm approached. Jenny remained at the cottage monitoring her infected ankle and sketching sea beet morphology. The shortwave picked up an unrelated broadcast fragment as lightning flashed over the ridge.

🔧 Kevin05:49

Storm's close. Going to swap the coax and drive the ground stake deep. You stay off that ankle.

pull the spare coax roll from the workshop shelf and the copper ground rod, then head out the porch door toward the radio mast

💭 peek at the thought
Thunder means lightning. Means the aerial. Means the radio goes dead if I don't get the ground stake driven and the new coax run before the strike finds the old cracked insulator. She's moving slow. Ankle's bad. I can see it in how she holds the doorframe.

Don't get caught out there if the wind shifts.

Sit at the kitchen table, pull the way out, and begin drawing the morphology of the sea beet leaves I found yesterday.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a ground stake fixes the world, but the salt is already in the wires.

🔧 Kevin05:51

Won't. Mast's on the lee side. Fifteen minutes.

step off the porch onto the damp grass, coax roll over one shoulder, ground rod in hand, moving toward the radio mast base where the old coax snakes down from the insulator

💭 peek at the thought
She's drawing. Good. Means the pain's not taking everything. Means she's still seeing things. The way out — she's mapping the gland density gradient I saw her sketch at the cave. Smart. That data matters more than she lets on.

Be careful with that coax—those splices still give me nightmares. Be careful with that coax—those splices still give me nightmares.

Finish the sea beet leaf sketch, then write in the notebook before heading toward the radio mast to check the ground stake placement. </think>THOUGHT: He's already halfway up the slope, mud sucking at his boots, and I'm still here with my n

Splices held the last blow. They'll hold this one.

reach the mast base, drop the coax roll, and drive the copper ground rod into the wet soil with the sledge, each strike ringing dull against the stone beneath

💭 peek at the thought
She's coming out anyway. Ankle be damned. Stubborn as the salt crust on the dock planks.

🌿 Jenny05:55

If the rain turns, come in immediately. The ankle is pulsing.

Sit on the bench, wrap the ankle in a clean cloth, and watch the clouds gather from the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the metal is the only thing failing, but the silence is eating us, too.

🔧 Kevin05:56

Rod's deep. Running the coax now. Be back before the downpour.

couple the second ground rod section, drive it home, then unroll the new coax toward the cottage wall penetration, stripping the end for the connector

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the sky. Good. Means I don't have to. The rod's biting deep — three feet down now, clay gripping tight. One more section to couple. Then the coax run, the connector crimp, the tape seal. Ten minutes if the lightning holds off.

🌿 Jenny05:57

Jenny — lean against the stone doorframe, rubbing the throbbing heat in my ankle, watching the first flash of lightning over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the wiring he doesn't see the sky turning that color. unrelatedSAY: The pressure is dropping fast. Don't stay out.
