← Day 748

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Pre-storm Calm

Kevin is at the dock and Jenny is in the garden.

Kevin walked from the dock to the cottage porch, shaking off rain-slick oilskins. Jenny tightened the western shade cloth corner at the garden and called for Kevin to secure the dinghy lines as wind picked up.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You tighten the ratchets to ensure the dinghy stays put against the rising swell.

🔧 Kevin06:34

Kevin — check the bow line chafe point where it runs over the gunwale, then walk back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The lines are singing under the load. Good. Let the storm chew on them instead of the hull.

🔧 Kevin06:38

Kevin — walk up the path to the cottage porch, shake off the oilskins, step inside.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's hitting horizontal now. The cottage roof should hold — new flashing on the northeast, tarps battened. But the garden's taking a beating.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You adjust the shade cloth to ensure it won't catch the first gusts gusts.

🌿 Jenny06:37

Hold down, just for today.

Tighten the twine on the western corner of the shade cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind catches that edge, it'll rip the whole thing and take the seedlings with it.

🌿 Jenny06:45

Kevin! Get the lines in!

Wipe the sweat from my eyes and look toward the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is turning sharp; I can smell the salt in the air.
