Evening at the shrine

Kevin and Jenny meet on the cottage porch as dusk presses in, the barometer at 976 and rising. They shoulder daypacks — radio, notebook, the letter to Tom — and start up the ridge path toward the ring of stones, the wind gusting through the spruce and the tide high against the dock below.

Kevin took the heavy water basin from Jenny to ease her trek back up the slick ridge path. The humidity remains oppressive as the tide begins its retreat, leaving the shrine quiet and still.

🌿 Jenny06:49

Watch your step, Kevin. The ridge is slick from the humidity.

walk toward the spring, dip the basin into the cold water, and wince as the weight shifts onto my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is too heavy to breathe properly; if I don't find that soil soon, the seeds are just ghosts.

🔧 Kevin06:49

You want me to take the basin?

walk toward the spring, eyes on her ankle and the footing ahead

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slow on that ankle. Should've carried the basin for her. The ridge path doesn't forgive a bad step, especially not in this damp.

🌿 Jenny06:51

Yes, please. I need to get back to the cottage.

lean heavily on the driftwood cane and hand him the metal basin.

💭 peek at the thought
My hands are too tired to hold the weight, and I don't want to be a way tonight.

🔧 Kevin06:51

Right. Go on. I'll bring the water up.

take the basin from her, steady it against my hip, and walk back toward the cottage path while she heads for the shrine

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking for help often. Means it's worse than she's letting on. The cane's taking more weight than yesterday.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:53

Don't take too long. The wind is turning.

continue to the ring of stones, tracing the worn names on the weathered rock with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so helpful when he doesn't have to look at the rot in the wood.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:53

Won't be long.

carry the basin up the cottage path, set it on the porch, then turn and jog up the ridge path toward the shrine

💭 peek at the thought
Wind turning means the barometer's lying or the front's moving faster than I thought. She's walking into it alone with that ankle. Should go with her. But the water's heavy and the cottage needs securing if the swell picks up.

🌿 Jenny06:55

Jenny — sit down on a flat stone, looking out over the grey horizon where the island meets the sea.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast for this heat. My ankle is screaming at me.

🔧 Kevin06:56

(soft) The ridge's still safe, but the tide's high.

crouch beside her stone, hand over the basin, and listen to the wind through the spruce.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence is a loaded pause. She's looking at the sea, maybe at the tide or at me. The wind's a whisper now, but the storm's coming. I should maybe say something? Or let her breathe.

🌿 Jenny06:59

I know. The air feels like water tonight.

reach into my pocket and touch the cold tin of seeds, feeling the weight of my grandmother's garden.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't find the right spot. Everything is just too much salt and stone.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:59

The shrimp boats used to call this the drowning wind. Comes in quiet, then the sea just... rises.

sit on the stone beside her, shoulder to shoulder, and watch the horizon blur into grey

💭 peek at the thought
The tin's cold from the wind. She's tracing her fingers over it like it's a prayer. The air does feel like water — thick, salt-saturated, pressing against the skin. Barometer at 976 and rising slow, but the swell's already licking the dock planks.

🌿 Jenny07:01

Jenny — lean my head back against the cold stone, closing my eyes as the throb in my ankle syncs with the waves.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't find the soil, the seeds will just rot. I'm so tired of fighting it. continuedSAY: It's the humidity today. The whole island.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:01

You need the ibuprofen?

stay pressed against her, one hand finding her wrist to count the pulse, the other resting on the tin in my pocket

💭 peek at the thought
Her breathing's shallow. The ankle's pulsing hot against the cold stone — I can feel the rhythm of it through my own leg where we touch. She's not complaining. Just riding it. The tin presses against my thigh through the pocket, grandmother's seeds, Tom's letter, the radio log. Everything heavy tonight.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:03

Maybe later. Just stay for a minute.

let my hand fall heavy in my lap, watching the wind pull at the grass on the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking for a fix. I just want to sit in the quiet of the shrine.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:03

Yeah, will. Just…listen.

sit on the stone, press my hand against the tin in my pocket, keep my eyes on the wind-whipped grass and the swell below.

💭 peek at the thought
She wants me to sit. Let her breathe. The wind's coarse. The tide's whispering.
