A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin replaces the cracked Yanmar impeller with the spare, checking the housing for further pitting as he works. Jenny updates the manifest to order six ceramic seals and sketches the specific wear patterns while the rain hammers against the cottage.

🔧 Kevin08:02

Kevin — pull on oilskins and boots, walk to the workshop corner of the cottage, unbolt the Yanmar's raw water pump cover, inspect the impeller housing for pitting

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's hammering the porch roof. Good sound. Means the tank's full. Means I don't have to haul from the spring today. Means the Yanmar's cold and I can pull the impeller housing without burning my knuckles. Letter to Tom's in the dry bag by the loft ladder — wrote it last night, sealed it. Just need to walk it to the post box. Which doesn't exist. So it stays in the bag until the supply boat comes. Five days. Maybe.

The salt is getting into the mechanical seal, you know.

Sit on the kitchen stool, shifting the weight off my throbbing ankle, and watch him through the frame of the doorway.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the pump again. It's always the pump or the engine when the rain picks up.

🔧 Kevin08:05

Ceramic seal kit. Should've come with the impeller order.

wipe the housing bore clean with a rag, probe the seal face with a fingertip feeling for grooves, set the cover bolts aside on a clean rag

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Seen the weep at the seal face after the last run — fine white crust where the salt water dries. Bronze adapter's holding the bore true, but the seal's the weak link now. Should've ordered the ceramic seal kit with the impeller. Didn't. Thought the adapter'd buy me a season. Sea doesn't give seasons.

🌿 Jenny08:07

I'll put it on the radio list for next time. I was distracted with the Carex survey.

Reach for my sketchbook and pencil, beginning a quick, precise technical drawing of the pump housing to note the specific wear patterns.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, I should have checked the manifest when the boat was here three weeks ago.

🔧 Kevin08:07

List's on the shelf by the set. Add a spare shaft sleeve. And a box of ceramic seat rings.

lift the impeller out with two fingers, hold it to the porch light, count the vanes and check each tip for scoring

💭 peek at the thought
Her hand's steady on the pencil. Ankle's throbbing — can see the tension in her jaw — but the line work's clean. She draws what she sees, not what she hopes. That's why the transect data's good. That's why the radio list gets written. I'll order the seal kit. And the impeller. And a spare shaft sleeve while I'm at it.

🌿 Jenny08:11

The sleeve I machined yesterday, it's bronze, should be in the shop box. I'll add it to the manifest. What about the ceramic seat rings?

Move toward the doorway, leaning slightly on my cane to support my weight. </think>THOUGHT: He's right about the spares, I should have checked the manifest. Follow him toward the door, testing the edge of my cane on the wooden floorboards.

💭 peek at the thought
He's thorough tonight. I should be too. The shaft sleeve I filed yesterday - it's still good, should fit.

Shop box, top shelf. Bronze sleeve's wrapped in oiled rag. Seat rings — order six. Two for now, four for the locker.

set the impeller on the clean rag, pull the magnifying glass from my pocket, examine the vane roots for hairline cracks

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving. Good. Means the ankle's holding. The bronze sleeve I turned yesterday's in the shop box — measured it twice, bore's true to two thou. Ceramic seat rings are cheap insurance. Salt eats the soft ones in a month. Hard ones last a season if the water's clean. Ours isn't.

🌿 Jenny08:13

Six seat rings, two now, four in the locker. I'll add the sleeve to the manifest.

Take the sketchbook from my pack and add a small notation to the pump drawing: "ceramic seals ordered, 6 qty."

💭 peek at the thought
He's methodical enough to notice the cracks I missed. I should trust his judgment on the spares.

🔧 Kevin08:13

Impeller's cracked at the roots. Swapping the spare.

walk to the radio shelf, unzip the dry bag, pull out the spare impeller, compare vane profile to the old one

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Written down means it happens. The magnifier shows three vanes with hairline cracks at the root — fatigue from cavitation, not salt. Impeller's done. Spare's in the dry bag by the radio. New one from the supply crate if it came. If not, the spare's got twenty hours on it. That's fine for now.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:17

Good. We don't need that failing mid-storm.

Sit on the kitchen stool, rubbing my throbbing ankle while watching him work.

💭 peek at the thought
He saw the cracks. I was too focused on the soil pH to see the stress fractures.
