Evening Storm Shelter

The rain has turned into a relentless drumming on the roof, and the air inside the cottage is thick with the smell of damp wool and woodsmoke. Kevin enters, dripping water, as they prepare to hunker down for the night ahead.

The humid air hangs heavy over the cottage as the overcast sky thickens, threatening the coming rain. The tide has retreated, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools and the sandbars leading toward the reef. Kevin checks the water tank, noting the level is nearly full, while Jenny rests on the porch, her ankle throbbing despite the recent treatment.

Trench is full. Spillway's running but the ground's saturated. Back wall of the cottage might take on water by morning.

Strip off wet oilskins, hang them by the stove. Check the northeast foundation corner where the leak was — flashlight beam along the stonework.

💭 peek at the thought
North ridge trench is a lost cause tonight. Clay's swallowing water faster than the spillway can take it. Need to check the cottage foundation before the water finds a new path.

Move the tin to the kitchen table. Now. Away from the wall.

Stand up with a wince holding my ankle, grab the heirloom seed tin from the shelf, and place it in the center of the dry wooden table.

💭 peek at the thought
If the back wall seeps, the seed tin is gone. I can't lose those seeds to a damp floor.

Good call.

Pull out the chair opposite her. Sit. Hands on the table, steam rising off wool sleeves. Watch the tin, then her face.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Tin on the shelf by the back wall — if the foundation weeps, it hits the floor first. She moved before I could. Ankle's bad but she's not waiting for help.

🌿 Jenny09:05

It's the only thing that stays dry.

Sit down heavily, rubbing my throbbing ankle under the table, and stare at the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the tin like it's just metal. It's everything I have left of her garden.

🔧 Kevin09:05

The spare tarp's in the shed. If the roof lets go, we'll have it.

Reach across the table, two fingers tap the tin's lid. Let hand fall back. Listen to the rain hammer the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
She's protecting the seeds like they're the last thing that matters. Maybe they are. The tin's heavy — rusted lid, sealed tight. She carried it on a swollen ankle across a slick floor without asking.

🌿 Jenny09:07

We'll have to move to the bedroom if it does.

Pull the tin closer to me, my hand hovering over the cold metal, and watch the barometer drop.

💭 peek at the thought
If the roof lets go, a tarp won't be fast enough to save the soil.

🔧 Kevin09:07

Radio dies if the kitchen floods. Stove too.

Palm flat on the tin's lid. Cold metal through wet wool. Don't lift it. Just hold.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's still falling. 976 and dropping. Bedroom's smaller, easier to heat, roof over it held last winter. But the radio's in here. And the stove. She's handing me the tin like I'm the one who decides what happens to it.

🌿 Jenny09:09

Then we take the tin to the bed first.

Place my hand over his on the tin, feeling the weight of the seeds, and listen to the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
If the stove goes, I'm just sitting in the dark with dead seeds.
