Evening shelter from the storm

The heavy rain has slowed to a steady, rhythmic thrum on the tin roof. Kevin and Jenny are in the kitchen, the smell of boiling water filling the damp air as they assess the rising water level.

Kevin heads out into the rain to inspect the north ridge trench and the spillway, while Jenny watches from the window, nursing her throbbing ankle as the storm intensifies, turning the garden into a muddy, slow-draining bog.

Kettle's boiling. You want the broth or coffee?

Walk to the stove and lift the kettle lid, checking the water level, then glance toward the northeast corner where the copper pipe exits the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
Water's rising fast. Tank's full but the overflow's backing up into the foundation again. Need to check the copper spillway hose before the clay saturates.

🌿 Jenny08:53

Coffee. Please. If there is any left.

Lean against the kitchen counter, shifting weight off the left foot and wincing.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is screaming, and I'm too hungry to think clearly about the drainage.

🔧 Kevin08:53

There's half a jar. Strong enough to strip paint.

Pour coffee into two tin mugs, set one on the counter within her reach, and wrap my hands around the other.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring that ankle hard. The antibiotics should've kicked in by now. Might need to lance again if the heat doesn't drop by morning.

🌿 Jenny08:55

Thanks. I need the caffeine.

Take a slow, scalding sip of the coffee while way out the window at the rain-slicked garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be helpful, but the silence between us is heavier than the rain.

🔧 Kevin08:55

The tomatoes?

Nod toward the window, steam rising from my mug.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the garden beds. The tomato stakes I drove yesterday — wonder if they held in this wind. The shade cloth anchors were shredded by that crab. Should've reinforced them with the greenheart offcuts.

🌿 Jenny08:57

They're pooling. The soil isn't draining fast enough.

Trace the rim of the mug with my thumb, eyes fixed on the garden patch in the dark.

💭 peek at the thought
If they drown in this runoff, the whole day's work is gone.

🔧 Kevin08:57

The north ridge trench taking any of it?

Set the mug down, pull on my boots by the door, and grab the headlamp from the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The lime beds I amended are holding at 6.8–7.0 but the untreated zones are still 5.5–5.8. Clay's saturated. The intercept trench I dug on the north slope should've caught this runoff but the volume's too high. Need to check if the bitumen membrane's holding.

🌿 Jenny08:59

Not enough. It's turning into a bog.

Set the mug down with a wince as I shift my weight to move toward the door.

💭 peek at the thought
If the trench is saturated, the water will just back up into the garden beds.

🔧 Kevin08:59

Stay off it. I'll check the trench and the spillway.

Open the porch door, step into the rain, and head for the garden path, headlamp beam cutting through the downpour.

💭 peek at the thought
Bog means the Carex transect I logged last month is underwater. Salt burn recovery gets set back every time this happens. If the drainage bed on the north ridge fails, the whole slope goes. Jenny shouldn't be walking on that ankle — not in this muck. I'll go.

🌿 Jenny09:01

Be careful. The mud is slick near the ridge.

Watch him through the window, the steam from the coffee fogging the glass as I rub my throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out there in this, and my ankle is a throbbed mess.
