The Rising Tide

The rain has turned to a steady downpour as the tide reaches the dock. Kevin enters the cottage, dripping and exhausted, to join Jenny for evening.

The rain continues its steady, warm patter against the roof of the shrine, the air heavy with the scent of wet earth and salt. The tide is high, the waves lapping rhythmically against the reinforced dock pilings. Inside the cottage, the atmospheric pressure continues to drop, signaling something more significant than the passing dry season showers.

🔧 Kevin11:20

Kevin — walk into the cottage, peel off the soaked oilskin jacket, hang it on the peg by the door

💭 peek at the thought
The auger's still clogged with clay at the bottom of the pack. My forearms are shaking from fighting it all afternoon. The tide's up to the dock planks now — heard it slapping the pilings on the way up. Jenny'll have the kettle on. She always does.

The boat is three days out. Don't get your hopes up about the dry wood on the ridge.

Jenny drops the way onto the table and pulls her leg back to hide the wrapped ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
way looks like a drowned rat, and I can't even stand up to greet him without my ankle throbbing.

🔧 Kevin11:22

Noted. Radio confirmed it this morning. Captain said two-hour wait at high tide.

pull out the chair opposite her, sit heavy, reach for the tin mug on the table

💭 peek at the thought
Three days. High tide window. Two-hour wait. She's protecting the ankle — good. Means she's not putting weight on it. The barometer's still falling though. 982 and dropping. This isn't a three-day window if the front stalls.

way we better have the inventory list ready. The garden is still a mess anyway.

Jenny picks up her pencil and begins sketching the morphology of a sea much leaf on the margin of her notes.

💭 peek at the thought
Two hours is barely enough time to unload the salt, let alone fix the generator's rust.

🔧 Kevin11:25

List is done. In the ditch bag with the medevac forms and the letter.

lift the mug, blow steam off the broth, take a slow sip

💭 peek at the thought
She's drawing sea beet glands again. Margin of the page, same as always — documenting while the world rots. The inventory list is in the ditch bag. Wrote it up after the crate recovery. She hasn't asked to see it.

🌿 Jenny11:25

Good. I need to check the water level again. The tank is low.

Jenny leans back, wincing as the movement shifts the weight on her swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the forms are ready if this infection gets septic before the boat shows up.

🔧 Kevin11:26

Tank's full. 400 litres. Overflow repair held. Catchment's been running all afternoon.

set the mug down, push back from the table, stand

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's full. 400 litres. Checked it this morning before heading to the south slope. She's confused or testing me. The overflow repair held — oak shims and marine epoxy on the northeast corner. Rain's been hammering the roof all afternoon; catchment should be fine.

way sit. You're dripping on the floor and the rain never stops.

Jenny stops sketching and looks at the tin of seeds sitting on the counter.

💭 peek at the thought
way's always fixing the things he can see, never the things that are actually rotting.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:33

Kevin — sit back down slow, pull the chair legs out of the spreading water, wipe hands on thighs

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Puddle forming under the chair. The rain on the roof is a steady roar now — not the on-and-off from this morning. Barometer at 982 and falling. This front's settling in.

Jenny reaches for her waterlogged notebook and flips to a page covered in sea beet sketches. </think>THOUGHT: way's hands are still wet from the soaked oilskin, and I can see the water spreading across the floorboards. Jenny reaches for her

Kevin — reach for the cloth by the stove, wipe the puddle under my chair, then wipe my hands and face

💭 peek at the thought
She said it twice. Voice flat. The ankle's worse than she's letting on — wincing when she leaned back, now reaching for the notebook like a shield. The rain's not stopping. Barometer's still falling. Three days to the boat if the weather holds. It won't.

🔧 Kevin11:54

Your pencil.

lean down, pick up the pencil from the floor, set it on the table beside her notebook

💭 peek at the thought
The pencil taps once, twice on the floorboards. She doesn't pick it up. Her fingers hover over the notebook page — sea beet glands drawn in careful rows, elevation gradients marked in pencil. The ankle's bad. She's not moving to get the pencil. The rain hammers the roof. Three days to the boat. The barometer reads 982 and falling.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:03

Thanks.

Jenny takes the pencil, her fingers tracing the worn wood as she looks at the tin of seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't even see the way my hand is shaking when I reach.
