The Rising Tide

The rain intensifies, and the wind picks up, rattling the storm lashings. The tide is at its peak.

The rain turns into a heavy driving downpour, drumming against the stone walls of the cottage. Kevin heads out to the dock to check the structural integrity against the surge, his headlamp cutting through the grey gloom, while Jenny stays inside, wincing at the throbbing in her ankle as she sketches the water pooling against the foundation in her notebook.

Jenny — shifts her weight to her good leg and tightens the wrapping on her swollen ankle, wincing at the throbbing heat.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pressure drops any further, the north ridge will be a slurry by morning and I'll never get those seeds in ground.

🔧 Kevin12:05

You want me to look at the dock while the tide's high?

walk to the porch and lean against the frame, watching the water through the rain

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking for help and I won't offer it until she does. The tide's at the turn — if the wind holds this angle past slack, the dock takes the load sideways. Need to check the south piling brace before the water drops.

🌿 Jenny12:07

Check the pilings on the west side. The surge is pulling at the bolts.

Picks up her pencil and begins sketching the way the water is pooling against the stone foundation of the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking for a reason to be out in the wet so he doesn't have to watch.

🔧 Kevin12:07

Right.

pull on oilskin and boots, grab the heavy wrench and headlamp, step out onto the porch into the driving rain

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the water better than the barometer. West pilings take the fetch off the open channel — if the surge is pulling bolts, the sister brace on the south piling's taking shear it wasn't built for. I'll check the north ridge drainage too while I'm out; the clay's already weeping.

🌿 Jenny12:11

Be careful, the wood will be slicker than it looks.

Watches his headlamp beam vanish into the grey, then turns back to her notebook, sketching the way patterns near the garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
If the dock goes, the dinghy goes, and then I'm stuck on this rock forever.

🔧 Kevin12:11

Kevin — move down the garden path toward the dock, headlamp sweeping the planks, testing each step before committing weight

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — greenheart goes like ice when the salt and rain hit it together. The south piling brace is the one I finished last week with the last 150mm through-bolt. If that's moving, the whole dock structure's compromised. Headlamp beam catches the rain horizontal. Tide's at the turn, maybe fifteen minutes to slack. Need to see the bolts before the water drops and hides the movement.

🌿 Jenny12:14

Jenny — closes the notebook with a heavy thud, listening to the rain hammer the stone walls.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast; the surge is going to catch the underpings.

🔧 Kevin12:14

Kevin — brace against the west piling, wrench on the lower bolt nut, feel for play while a wave loads the structure

💭 peek at the thought
The planks hold. No give underfoot. Headlamp picks out the south piling first — the sister brace is tight, the 150mm through-bolt shows no fresh rust streaks, the doubler plate flush. Good. But the west piling, the one Jenny flagged... the surge is hitting it broadside. Water's up to the lower bolt head. Can see the timber flex, just a hair, each wave impact. The ring bolt on that piling — the one we reset with oak wedges — the mortise is breathing. Wedges holding, but the wood around them is pulping.
