The Rising Tide

The tide is coming in faster than predicted, threatening to submerge the lower dock before the work is completed.

Kevin and Jenny bolted greenheart sister beams to the northeast dock stringer as the tide rose faster than expected, working the lower bolt hole underwater by feel. Both through-bolts were epoxied and torqued before the water covered the joint, but Kevin's 19mm auger bit snapped on the final withdrawal, leaving the bit shank stuck in the lower hole.

🌿 Jenny13:03

The tide is moving too fast, Kevin. We need to secure the sisterings before the jetty goes.

way limps own the cottage, clutching the way edge for support, to grab the heavy mallet and the jar of epoxy.

💭 peek at the thought
If the water takes those planks now, the whole structure will shift, and I can't fix it again with this leg.

Cutting the cores to length now. You mix the epoxy — I'll drill and bolt.

walk up the jetty to the northeast corner, bow saw in hand, and start sawing the first greenheart core to the sister length Jenny marked, letting the teeth bite slow and straight through the dense grain

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the water's already licking the stringer joint. If we don't get the sisters bolted and the epoxy kicked off before the tide covers the work, we lose the bond and the rot spreads another foot inland. No time for perfect. Just get it held.

mix it thick. If it doesn't set right, the salt will eat it by morning.

sits on the cottage step, teeth grit, and mixes the epoxy on a scrap of wood with a flat stick.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working too slow. The water is already licking at the lower pilings.

🔧 Kevin13:05

Thick as peanut butter. Got it.

finish the cut on the first core, wipe sweat off my face with a forearm, then pick up the 19mm auger bit and brace to drill the through-bolt holes through the existing stringer and new sister, working the bit steady despite the tide slappin

💭 peek at the thought
She's teaching me to suck eggs, but she's not wrong. Salt water finds every pinhole. Thick mix, no air, work fast. My shoulder's already aching from the saw — this greenheart doesn't give.

🌿 Jenny13:07

way up. The tide isn't waiting for your drill bits.

stands at the edge of the dock, her ankle throbbing with every shift, and watches the grey water foam over the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is reaching the rot now. If we don't get these bolts in, the jetty is gone.

🔧 Kevin13:07

Drilling blind on the bottom hole. Hold the sister tight against the stringer — don't let it shift.

plunge the auger bit into the lower hole position where water's already rising, drilling by feel and the angle of the brace, driving chips up through the slurry, then immediately switch to the upper hole before the tide covers that too

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Water's already covering the lower bolt hole. Have to drill blind by feel, drive the bolts home, and trust the epoxy to chase the salt out. No time for pretty.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny13:09

Way up. Get the bolts in before the epoxy washes out.

leans her weight against the timber, bracing the infected ankle with one hand, and hands him the heavy bolts.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is halfway over the planks. If that sister moves, the whole thing comes apart.

🔧 Kevin13:09

Bolts going in. Washers first.

slather thick epoxy into both drilled holes and onto the bolt shanks, drive the 150mm stainless through-bolts up through the sister and stringer, slap washers and nyloc nuts on, and torque them down with the 19mm wrench, lower bolt first wh

💭 peek at the thought
Two bolts, two washers, two nylocs. Water's up to the middle of the lower hole already. Epoxy's mixed thick but the tide's moving faster than cure time. Drive them home, torque to spec, let the rising water seat the sisters. That's the best we get today.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny13:11

way, Kevin. The tide's taking the lower shelf.

watches the water swirl around the posts, her ankle throbbing in time with the waves, and grips the edge of the garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is over the wood now. If those don't hold, we're losing the jetty.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:11

Done. Both sisters bolted. Epoxy's in the joints. We check the bond at low tide tomorrow.

wipe the wrench clean on a rag, tuck it in my belt, and climb off the jetty onto the bank before the deck goes slippery, moving slow for the rung that's always loose

💭 peek at the thought
Both bolts home. Nylocs seated. Epoxy squeezing out the joints — good, means the voids are filled. Water's over the lower sister face now. Nothing more to do here but let the tide do its work and check the bond at low water tomorrow. My shoulders are burning and the hunger's gone sharp. Time to get off the dock before the planks go slick.
