Evening meal and low-tide plan

They sit at the cottage table with tin mugs of limpet broth and the last of the corned beef. The tide is high and loud against the dock. Kevin has the spare auger bit ready. Jenny has her notebook open to the north ridge sketches. The barometer reads 981 hPa and still falling.

The air is heavy and still, the 31°C heat pressing against the cottage as the high tide reaches its peak, water lapping rhythmically against the reinforced dock pilings. Inside, the scent of drying sea beet and medicinal poultice fills the small space, while the barometer shows a slow, steady drop, signaling a coming shift in the dry season weather.

Barometer's still falling. Swell'll hit the dock by midnight if the wind shifts east. Going to check the mooring lines and the generator shed before I turn in.

walk to the porch and pull on oilskin jacket

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still dropping. 981 and the tide's already high — that's not the weather holding, that's the weather coming. Should've moved the generator fuel up yesterday. Still have the spare bit for the dock, but if the swell picks up tonight the lower bolt hole's gone anyway. Jenny's watching me over her mug. She knows I'm not sleeping until this passes.

Watch the tension on the starboard line. The tide is higher than yesterday.

Pick up pencil and continue the sketch of the drainage patterns on the area ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out there in the dark again while I'm sitting here with a throbbing leg.

Starboard line's next on the list. Going now.

step off the porch and walk down the garden path toward the dock, headlamp beam cutting the dark

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The starboard line took the chafe last storm — if the tide's higher tonight it'll saw through the serving. Should've doubled it yesterday. She's still sketching drainage patterns like the paper matters more than the water rising. Her ankle's swollen past the wrap but she hasn't said a word about it.

🌿 Jenny13:15

Keep the radio on in case the generator fails.

Lean back in the chair and close eyes, focusing on the throb in the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get himself hurt out there if that swell hits as hard as I think.

🔧 Kevin13:16

Radio's on. Generator's good. Back before the tide turns.

continue down the path to the dock, headlamp picking out the mooring ring and the starboard spring line in the swell

💭 peek at the thought
Generator's got half a tank and the carburetor diaphragm's new. She's asking me to baby-sit the radio because she doesn't trust the grid — or me — to hold through the night. Her ankle's pulsing hot under the blanket. She won't ask for help. I'll check the starboard line, the mooring ring, the generator shed, then sit with the radio until dawn.

🌿 Jenny13:17

Be careful of the rocks under the dock.

Reach for the poultice to adjust the wrap on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is too high for him to be out there alone, that stubborn man.

🔧 Kevin13:19

Rocks haven't moved. I know the bottom.

reach the dock edge, crouch, and run fingers along the starboard spring line where it leads through the chock to the piling, feeling for chafe in the dark

💭 peek at the thought
Rocks under the dock haven't moved in fifteen years. She's not talking about rocks — she's talking about the bit shank stuck in the lower bolt hole, the tide covering the joint, me working by feel in black water. Her fingers are stiff adjusting that poultice. The infection's tracking. She knows it. I know it. We both know the medevac forms are in the ditch bag by the loft ladder.

🌿 Jenny13:19

If the line is fraying, use the extra length from the shed.

Open the notebook and sketch the morphology of the sea beet leaves I found today.

💭 peek at the thought
He knows the bottom, but he doesn't know how fast the salt is eating.
