The Approaching Squ

The first heavy drops of rain hit the hot dust, smelling of ozone and salt as the wind picks up from the sea.

The sky has bruised into a deep purple, and the air is heavy with the humidity of the approaching front. The tide is rising steadily, lapping at the new dock pilings with a renewed urgency. Inside the cottage, the smell of salt and medicinal herbs hangs thick as the first gusts of wind begin to rattle the heavy door.

🌿 Jenny15:45

Kevin, get the seed tin inside. Now. The sky is turning.

Stand up with a wince and limp toward the cottage, shielding the tin with my body.

💭 peek at the thought
If this rain holds, the north slope will be a swamp before I can even dig a hole.

🔧 Kevin15:45

Moving.

Grab the tin from her hands as she passes, tuck it against my chest, and follow her up the path to the cottage at a fast walk.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The barometer's been dropping all afternoon. That tin's the only thing on this island that can't be replaced.

🌿 Jenny15:47

Watch the door, the way is going to catch the wind again.

Step into the cottage and collapse onto the kitchen chair, propping my leg up on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's moving, but my own feels like it's being squeezed by pliers.

🔧 Kevin15:47

Got it.

Step inside, kick the door shut hard against the rising gust, throw the deadbolt and the slide bolt both. Set the seed tin on the high shelf by the radio — dry, out of reach of any floor water.

💭 peek at the thought
The east shutter's been fighting the wind all week. If it blows open now, we lose the roof over the pantry.

🌿 Jenny15:49

"Thank you." (Voice hoarse from disuse.)

Remove the poultice from my ankle and examine the edges for fresh redness, then reach for my field notebook to record the infection's progression.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. At least the seeds are safe. But my ankle is burning again, and I can feel the infection spreading through my veins like ink in water.

🔧 Kevin15:49

Pull the poultice off.

Remove the sea‑beet‑mint poultice, clean the wound with saline, apply fresh gauze, and replace the old gauze in the medevac bag. Flip the field notebook page to log the current redness and note the time.

💭 peek at the thought
The bruise's spreading, but the poultice seems to be holding. If I let the infection settle, we’ll have a point to stand on.

🌿 Jenny15:57

It's getting worse. The swelling is reaching the knee.

major back against the wall and close my eyes, listening to the rain hitting the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
The skin is too hot. If this goes to the bone, I won't be able to walk the ridge ever again.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin15:57

I'm raising the coastguard. Now.

Cross to the radio, key the mic on 2182, and transmit: "Pan-pan, pan-pan, pan-pan. Sorrel Island caretaker station. Position 49-12 North, 006-45 West. Medical emergency.

💭 peek at the thought
The red line's creeping past the ankle joint. If it hits the knee, the lymphatics are involved. We don't have IV antibiotics. The medevac forms are signed. The supply boat's three days out — if it comes at all. I need to call the coastguard on 2182 and tell them the situation straight.

🌿 Jenny15:59

"Tell them I need antibiotics. Serious infection." (Voice cracking.)

Press my hand over the throbbing heat in my leg despite the pain.

💭 peek at the thought
I hope they hear me over the static. The island is so loud today.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin15:59

Coastguard, this is Sorrel Island. Female, 38, lower leg infection spreading proximal to knee. Red streaking, heat, swelling. Oral doxycycline and metronidazole course completed 48 hours ago — no improvement. Request urgent medical evacuation or supply drop of IV antibiotics. Over.

Hold the mic, wait for the reply, keep the channel open.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not just asking for medicine. She's telling me to make sure they hear how bad it is.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:01

"Please answer." (Whispering to the radio.)

Lean head back against the cold metal of the radio and watch the static dance on the dial.

💭 peek at the thought
If they don't come, I'm going to lose the leg. The skin is so tight.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:01

Coastguard, Sorrel Island. Repeat: medical emergency, infection spreading above knee, oral antibiotics failed. Request immediate response. Over.

Keep the mic keyed, eyes on the signal strength meter, thumb ready to switch to Channel 16 then the supply boat's frequency if the coastguard doesn't come back.

💭 peek at the thought
The static stretches. Every second the squelch holds is another second the infection climbs. If they don't answer on 2182, I try the coastguard working frequency. If that fails, I raise the supply boat direct on their private channel — the captain knows this island, knows the reef. Someone has to hear.
