The Arrival of the Front

The first heavy drops of rain strike the tin roof, and the wind howls through the cracks in the walls.

The air is heavy and still, the flat sky darkening as thick clouds roll in from the horizon. The tide is high, waves lapping rhythmically against the reinforced pilings of the dock, and inside the cottage, the smell of salt and woodsmoke lingers in the air, while the scratching of a rat echoes behind the pantry shelves.

🔧 Kevin16:02

Generator's bearing noise got worse. Going to check the oil filter and secure the dinghy warp while I can still stand on the dock.

Pull on oilskins, grab the heavy wrench and headlamp, and head out to the dock to double the dinghy's stern spring and inspect the generator housing.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Barometer's been dropping all day — 981 and falling. Generator's port bearing singing that high whine again. Need to secure the dinghy lines and check the generator before the wind makes it impossible.

The tide is coming in fast, Kevin. way watch the swell, don't lose the boat.

watch him through the window, clutching my ankle, and silently sketch the way the wind bends the tall grass on the north slope.

💭 peek at the thought
If he goes out there in that surge, he'll slip on the wet wood and break a wrist.

🔧 Kevin16:05

Warp's doubled. Spring's holding. I'll watch the chocks.

Check the dinghy's stern spring tension, verify the storm anchor warp isn't chafing on the mooring ring, then move to the generator shed to pull the oil filter and inspect the port bearing.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the swell. Tide's pushing hard against the wind direction — confused water. Dinghy's the only way off this rock if things go wrong.

🌿 Jenny16:05

way keep the radio close. The pressure is dropping too fast for me to like. ownDO: stand up from the table, hiss as the ankle throbs, and move to the stove to boil more water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's stubborn as a mule, but the sea doesn'tization about his confidence.

🔧 Kevin16:06

Radio's on 2182. Volume up. Spare battery by the door.

Crack the generator housing, spin off the oil filter, and catch the drain in the pan — check for metal in the oil while the engine's still warm from this afternoon's test.

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure's dropping faster than the last storm. She hears it in her ankle; I hear it in the generator. Radio's the only thread to anywhere else.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:07

way keep the light on. The wind is turning to the south.

sit on the bench, wrap the swollen ankle in fresh gauze, and watch the rain blur the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get himself killed if that swell picks up before the boat comes.

🔧 Kevin16:08

Oil's clean. Bearing noise isn't lubrication. Might be the housing bolt we couldn't torque full spec.

Wipe the filter housing, spin on the new filter, torque to spec, then top up the oil. Shine the light on the port side mounting bolt — check if it's walked.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind backing south means the fetch opens up all the way from the Antarctic. Swell's going to build fast. Generator oil looks clean — no glitter in the drain pan. Filter's black but no metal teeth. Bearing's still singing though. That's not oil.

🌿 Jenny16:09

Check it twice. I don't want that generator vibrating the bolts off tonight.

lean against the doorframe, wincing as the weight shifts my ankle, and watch him work in the dim light.

💭 peek at the thought
If that bolt is loose, the whole assembly will tear itself apart when it hits a load.
