Shelter from the deluge

Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the sound of rain on the roof grows deafening. The generator hums in the distance, and the smell of wet earth fills the room while they assess the damage to the ridge.

The tide is receding, exposing the muddy shelf of the north ridge. The air is heavy with 32°C heat, and the wind has died down. The fissure in the clay near the cottage has widened by another few centimeters as the water seeps beneath the foundation stones.

🌿 Jenny19:11

The tide is rising faster than the charts predicted, Kevin. We need to move the equipment now, or the water will take the whole slope.

Jenny sits heavily at the kitchen table, wincing as she shifts weight off her ankle, and begins a rapid, detailed sketch of the widening fissure in the clay deposits.

💭 peek at the thought
The shoring is going to fail. If that trench goes, the whole area ridge follows with it.

🔧 Kevin19:13

Equipment's secondary. The trench shoring at the northeast corner is the only thing keeping the cottage foundation from undermining. If that goes, the radio mast follows.

cross to the porch, pull the notebook from the shelf, flip to the ridge layout sketch and add a quick pencil mark at the new fissure line Jenny's drawing

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the tide. The charts don't account for the pressure buildup behind the clay lens — water's finding the old fracture lines we mapped last week. Generator's holding but the filter housing repair won't take sustained vibration if the ground shifts under the skid.

🌿 Jenny19:17

Jenny — jenny stops drawing, her pencil hovering over the paper, as she stares at the tin of seeds sitting on the counter.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the mast, but if the soil stays this acidic, the garden won't last a season anyway. elseSAY: The pH is dropping too fast. If I don't stabilize the clay deposits, grandmother's seeds will just rot before they even hit the dirt.

🔧 Kevin19:17

You going to open it or keep using it for a paperweight?

pour two mugs of the limpet broth from the pot on the stove, set one beside her sketchbook without asking

💭 peek at the thought
She's looking at tin E. Again. Hasn't opened it since we hauled it up from the crate. The rust patterns on the lid match the stain on the chart fragments she burned.

🌿 Jenny19:19

Jenny — jenny tightens her grip on the pencil, her knuckles white, and avoids his eyes by focusing on the jagged line of the erosion sketch.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just a tin. He doesn't see the years of life waiting inside that metal. elseSAY: I'm not wasting them on a slope that's currently trying to swallow itself.

🔧 Kevin19:19

The shoring. If the tide's running two hours ahead of the tables, we've got maybe ninety minutes before the water hits the northeast piling. I need your readings on the clay shear plane to set the deadman anchors.

slide the mug closer to her hand, wait

💭 peek at the thought
She's not going to answer. The pencil's going to snap if she squeezes harder. Tin E, the chart fragments, the letter from the trust she won't let me read — all the same wound.

🌿 Jenny19:21

Jenny — jenny stands up, with a sharp intake of breath as her ankle throbs, and grabs the pH test kit and the notebook from the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the clock, and I'm looking at the chemistry. The soil is literally turning to soup. elseSAY: The clay is too saturated for a standard anchor. If I set the them now, they'll just pull right through the silt.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:21

Take the auger. Bit's cleared. I'll meet you at the trench with the greenheart plates and the last through-bolt.

grab the 150mm stainless through-bolt from the east shutter staging, the two greenheart sister plates from under the eaves, and the 19mm socket wrench, head for the porch door

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving. Good. Pain's sharp but she's not favouring the ankle as much as yesterday — antibiotics are working. The pH kit means she's testing the seepage water for salt intrusion at the shear plane. Smart. That'll tell us if the clay's holding or if we're pumping seawater.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:23

Jenny — jenny limps out own the porch, the wind hitting her face, and starts the slow descent toward the north ridge while clutching the test kit to her chest.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't find a stable pH in this mess, the whole project is dead. I'm tired of fighting the island. elseSAY: I'll be there. way make sure those plates are dry when you get.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:23

(nothing — she's already past earshot in the wind)

shoulder the porch door shut against the gust, jog down the garden path toward the north ridge, boots sinking in the saturated track

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's shifted west-northwest. Cold front leading edge. Barometer was 976 steady an hour ago — if it's dropping now, the tide surge gets worse before it breaks. She's moving slow but steady. Ankle's holding.
