Porch vigil in the wet night

Kevin and Jenny sit on the cottage porch under the overhang, mugs in hand, rain hammering the roof. The generator runs steady. The tank is full. The barometer holds at 978 hPa. Somewhere in the dark the supply boat is five days out.

Kevin and Jenny finished their coffee and broth on the porch, listening to the generator and the rain. They agreed on the day's priorities: Kevin will check the northeast foundation leak at first light and run the Yanmar at load, while Jenny will transect the splash zone and test soil pH near the north ridge slope. Both retired to rest.

Radio check at midnight. If nothing, I'll try Tom's frequency again at 0400.

sip coffee, watch the rain fall past the porch rail

💭 peek at the thought
She's quiet. Not the tired quiet — the thinking quiet. The barometer hasn't moved in six hours and that means something, or means nothing, and either way the supply boat's five days out and the radio's been silent since 0200. She knows Tom's birthday passed. She knows I didn't call. The mug warms my palms and the rain smells like wet stone and diesel and whatever's growing in the garden that shouldn't be.

I'll check the seed tin once more before I sleep, just to be sure.

sketch the morphology of the sea beet leaves in the margin of the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again; if the wind picks up, the north ridge tarp will be gone by morning.

Tin's sound. You checked it at the shrine. Packets dry, desiccant fresh.

set mug down on the porch rail, listen to the generator's steady thrum

💭 peek at the thought
She's stalling. The tin was fine at the shrine — dry packets, fresh desiccant, lid sealed. She knows it. I know it. But the rain's loud enough to cover the walking, and the shrine's on the way to nowhere, and maybe she needs the minutes alone with the dark and the stones. Let her.

I know. I'm just tired of the moisture levels shifting.

close the notebook and tuck the pencil into the binding.

💭 peek at the thought
He trusts the equipment, but he doesn't see the way the salt is already eating the metal.

The intercept trench held. Copper spillway's moving water off the foundation. North ridge beds drained.

pick up my mug again, blow steam off the surface

💭 peek at the thought
Not the tin. The garden. The beds. The pH gradient she mapped — lime beds holding 6.8–7.0, untreated sliding to 5.5–5.8 — and every storm pushes salt further up the slope. She's fighting ground that wants to be ocean. The damping-off in the pepper and lettuce cells. The basil chewed at the base. The tomato leaves showing salt stress. She's tired of losing what she plants.

🌿 Jenny09:01

It's a start. We just need the pH to stop fluctuating everywhere.

lean back against the stone wall and watch the rain blur the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
If the soil stays that dry, I might actually find a spot before the boat comes back.

🔧 Kevin09:02

Two bags lime on the boat. Enough for the north ridge expansion if we prioritize. Rest can wait.

turn the mug in my hands, feel the heat seep through the tin

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The lime's only half a sack left, damp in the shed. Two burlap bags came on the supply boat but that's months of beds if we spread it thin, and the untreated ground keeps sliding acidic every time the sky opens up. The sea beet handles it — salt glands pumping, morphology adapting across the elevation gradient she sketched. But the heirlooms don't have generations of this island in their DNA. They need steady ground. So do we.

🌿 Jenny09:03

Expansion is a luxury when the shade cloth is still flapping loose.

take a slow sip of the broth and listen to the rain drum the stone roof.

💭 peek at the thought
He always looks at the next project, while I'm just trying to keep the current one from rotting.
