The Pressure Drops Before the Rain

Kevin and Jenny stand on the reinforced dock watching the barometer drop to 978 hPa. The air is heavy and still as the high tide begins to push against the new sistered pilings.

Kevin ran the Yanmar at 1800 RPM at the dock while watching the foundation tell-tales; the engine held steady with no new vibration. Jenny tested the sheltered garden patch soil at pH 6.2 and noted the tide rising faster than predicted, with water already taking the gap under the jetty. Both returned to the cottage to inspect the northeast foundation fissure.

🔧 Kevin09:08

Hold at 978. Rising tide'll push the fissure. Want eyes on the northeast corner while I run the Yanmar?

walk to the dinghy, untying the bow line and stepping aboard to fire the engine

💭 peek at the thought
Water's already licking the new bolts. Good test — better now than midnight. She's watching the gauge, not the sea. Smart.

🌿 Jenny09:11

Watch the tell-tales on the cottage foundation. I'm checking the garden wall.

Tuck the notebook and pH kit under my arm and walk toward the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if the tide hits the peak now, those new bolts will groan.

🔧 Kevin09:11

Tell-tales. Foundation. Got it.

prime the Yanmar, pull the starter cord, and let the diesel settle into idle while watching the prop wash for vibration

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving with the cane but not limping as bad. Ankle's holding. Good.

🌿 Jenny09:13

Don't go out too far, the swell's coming in fast.

Kneel by the sheltered patch and begin the pH test on the soil.

💭 peek at the thought
The engine sounds too smooth; I hope that float needle didn't just start to stick again.

🔧 Kevin09:13

Not planning to. Running load right here.

engage the Yanmar in gear at the dock, bringing RPM up steady to 1800 while bracing against the transom, eyes on the tell-tale marks at the northeast corner

💭 peek at the thought
Swell's building faster than the barometer said. She's testing soil while I'm watching water climb the foundation. Backwards.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:17

Keep the RPM steady, I need to see the water level here.

Take a soil sample and dip the pH strip into the mixture, watching for the color change.

💭 peek at the thought
If he's running under load, the vibration is going to shake the silt right off the roots.

🔧 Kevin09:17

Steady at 1800. Foundation's at mark three. Same as yesterday.

hold the throttle, one hand on the tiller for balance, watching the waterline against the copper spillway outlet

💭 peek at the thought
Engine's clean at 1800. No shake in the mounts. Prop shaft true. Vibration fix held. Water's creeping the third tell-tale on the foundation — same as yesterday. Not worse.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:19

It's rising faster than the chart predicted. Watch the gap under the jetty.

Record the pHReading in the notebook and look at the tide.

💭 peek at the thought
Mark three? It's higher than it was this morning. The pressure is pushing the water up.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin09:19

Gap's taking water. Swell's ahead of tide.

ease the throttle back to idle, kill the Yanmar, and step onto the dock to check the sistered knee bolts at waterline

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Water's climbing the jetty planks two fingers faster than the tide table. Swell pushing in underneath — can hear it sucking at the new sistered knee. Engine note's clean though. No vibration in the deck plates.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:23

Get back to the cottage. We need to see if the fissure is widening.

Reach down and touch the rot in the timber plank, checking for movement.

💭 peek at the thought
If that gap starts to shear, the whole jetty is gone before the supply boat arrives.
