Foundation inspection at the northeast corner

Kevin and Jenny stand at the northeast foundation of the cottage where the copper spillway outlets onto the grass slope. The tide is rising, swell ahead of schedule, water gurgling past the first chalk mark on the fissure. The mortar at the crack edges is dark and wet. They have epoxy residue on their fingers and a rising barometer at their backs.

Kevin climbed to the hilltop with binoculars to assess the swell and ridge visibility while Jenny remained in the loft checking seed packets for moisture. The tide was high and the barometer rising, indicating stabilizing weather.

Membrane's holding the line but the mortar's wicking. Clay's saturated past the trench.

crouch at the fissure, press fingertips to the wet mortar edges, track the dark stain upward

💭 peek at the thought
The spillway's moving water but the fissure's still weeping at the edges — hydrostatic pressure's not dropping fast enough. Need to check if the bitumen membrane in the trench is seated proper or if the clay's channelling around it.

🌿 Jenny09:25

The pH is 6.2, but the soil is too heavy to hold anything right now. We need to move the tin higher up.

Sketch the cross-section of the foundation wall and the saturation depth, noting where the water is pooling behind the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
The hydrostatic pressure is pushing through the stone; if the water doesn't drain off the ridge, grandmother's seeds will just rot in the silt.

🔧 Kevin09:26

Loft's driest. Radio shelf's second. Your call which climb you want.

straighten, wipe hands on thighs, glance at the cottage wall where the loft hatch sits under the eaves

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the tin — if the clay's shedding water this fast, the seed tin at ground level's a sitting duck. But moving it means deciding where "higher up" actually is. The loft's dry but the ladder's a climb with a bad ankle. The shelf by the radio's solid.

🌿 Jenny09:27

The way. I want to be able to hear the rain on the roof.

Grab grandmother's seed tin and the notebook, then climb the ladder to the loft.

💭 peek at the thought
The loft is safer for the seeds, but I need to keep an eye on the radio if the boat actually comes.

🔧 Kevin09:27

Kevin — stand back, give her room on the ladder, watch her climb

💭 peek at the thought
She chooses the loft. Good — keeps the tin above any flood line and puts her where she can hear the weather coming. The ladder's steep but she knows every rung. I'll let her settle before I follow.

🌿 Jenny09:33

I'll be up here if the floor starts weeping again.

Set the seed tin on the dry floorboards and check the packets for any damp.

💭 peek at the thought
It's quiet up here, but the air smells like salt and old wood.

🔧 Kevin09:33

I'll check the trench at low water. Dock lines after.

turn toward the porch, pull the door shut against the damp air

💭 peek at the thought
She's settled. Tin's safe. Now I can check the trench proper at low tide — see if the bitumen's seated or if we're just buying time. Barometer's rising but that swell's still wrong. Need to walk the dock lines again before dark.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:35

Be careful with the swell. It looks heavy.

Sit on the floorboards and open the tin, feeling the seeds for any hint of moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tide rises any higher, that gap is going to widen. I need to see the depth.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin09:35

Binoculars from the hill. Then the lines.

step onto the porch, pull the binoculars from the hook by the door, head up the path toward the hilltop

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The swell's got teeth today — hitting the pilings at an angle the charts didn't show. Lines'll chafe where they lead over the chocks. I'll take the binoculars, check from the hilltop first. Saves walking the dock twice.

🌿 Jenny09:41

I'm not seeing the ridge clear. Can you get a better look from the top? I'm not seeing the ridge clear. Can you get a better look from the top?

Check the seed packets again, making sure they're still dry in the tin. </think>THOUGHT: The water's already higher than the chalk mark. I should have seen that coming. Check the seed packets again, making sure they're still dry in the tin.
