midday at the cottage
Kevin returns from the hilltop as light rain begins. Jenny is in the loft with the seed tin. The tide is high and the barometer rising. They meet at the porch for a late breakfast of limpet broth and corned beef.
Kevin and Jenny shared limpet broth on the porch while discussing the Yanmar's float needle and the garden's acidic soil. The tide rose against the dock pilings as a seabird chick fell from the cliffs above, alive but flightless on the rocks below.
Mornin'. Swell's clean. Twelve-second sets. Mooring looks solid.
walk down from the hilltop to the porch, set binoculars on the table, pour two mugs of limpet broth from the pot on the stove, slide one across to her, sit on the step with my own mug

The tide is coming in fast. Did you check the fuel float again?
Take a slow sip of the broth, watching the steam rise against the grey sky.

Float needle filed clean. Held at idle and load. No leak.
sip broth, watch the tide line climb the dock pilings, wipe epoxy residue from my thumb onto my trousers

I tested the sheltered patch. pH 6.2. Still too acidic for the Cananga. The tide's cresting faster than the barometer's rising. Foundation's singing.
Set the mug down hard, fingers tracing the rim where the broth met metal. </think>THOUGHT: Still no word about planting the seeds tomorrow. Wipe steam from the mug with my sleeve, leave a ring on the table.
