Watching the Rising Tides
Kevin sits on the porch with the coffee while the warm rain taps against the roof. Jenny sits beside him, checking the barometer as it holds at 985 hPa despite the falling pressure.
Kevin and Jenny walked the garden path together as a squall hit, wind tearing at the shade cloth and rain slanting sideways. They inspected the south slope drainage and garden wall, finding the new intercept trench already silting up and the wall's lower courses weeping. Kevin braced the shade cloth anchors while Jenny marked the worst soil slump with chalk.

Tighten the wrap on my ankle, wincing as the pressure shifts against the infection.

Wall's held three winters. Trench is new. You go up the ridge in this and you're not coming down clean.

The soil is already turning, Kevin. If I don't move them now, they rot.
Look out at the half-cleared garden, then back at the tin in my lap.
