Morning coffee and the trust letter

They sit at the kitchen table with the last of the coffee. The letter from the trust lies folded beside the tin marked E. Rain drums the roof. The barometer reads 982 hPa and falling. The supply boat is due in three days at high tide.

Kevin brews coffee and delivers it to Jenny on the porch as the sky thickens. He heads to the north ridge to inspect the drainage beds, while Jenny monitors the drop in barometric pressure.

The tide is going to be higher than they predicted. We need to check the radio one last time before dark to make sure we haven't missed a shift.

Trace the rust on the seed tin with a thumb while sketching the drainage pattern of the garden wall in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If the boat doesn't make it because of this front, we're stuck here for another week of salt and rot. My own's seeds in this tin are the only thing I haven't failed yet, but I'm too terrified to put them in this acidic dirt.

Radio at sixteen hundred. If the trawler's still out there, we'll raise them on 2182. If not, we'll know by dark.

drink the last of the coffee, set the mug down, and walk to the radio shelf to power up the shortwave

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the tide. The barometer's dropped three millibars since dawn and the wind's backing — this front's going to push water in before the boat gets here. The radio check's the only thing we can control.

🌿 Jenny10:51

Keep the frequency clear. The static is going to be hell tonight.

Lean back in the chair, rubbing the wrap on my ankle while watching the radio dials flicker.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, I'm going to run out of hope before I find a stable place to plant. My own is screaming, and the sky looks like it's closing in.

Sixteen hundred. I'll log whatever comes through.

flip the power switch on the shortwave, let the tubes warm, and tune to 2182 kHz while the rain hammers the roof

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong about the static. The front's close enough now the atmospherics will eat the low bands. But 2182's our watch frequency and the coast guard monitors it continuous — if the supply boat's still coming, they'll broadcast on it.

🌿 Jenny10:53

Listen for the pulse. If there's a signal, it will be weak under this storm.

Grip the pencil over the notebook, staring at the white space on the page.

💭 peek at the thought
If the static is all we get, those seeds are going to rot in the tin. I'm tired of waiting for the world to answer.

Listening.

hold the headset tight, adjust the RF gain down to cut the rain hash, and wait with the logbook open

💭 peek at the thought
The set's warm now. Carrier noise rides the squall static — rain on the aerial, mostly. Nothing human yet. I'll give it the full five minutes like the procedure card says.

🌿 Jenny10:55

It's nothing but white noise now.

Watch the needle on the signal strength, dancing to a rhythm that isn't there.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence between the bursts is louder than the wind. If the boat turned back, I'm just a ghost on this island.

🔧 Kevin10:56

Two minutes. Then we call it.

watch the S-meter dance, pencil poised over the radio log, waiting for the full five minutes to elapse

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The needle's just riding the precip static — no carrier underneath it. Three minutes in. Two more by the book, then log it and shut her down. Battery's precious.
