The Squall Breaches

Kevin and Jenny stand by the garden wall as the wind picks up and lashes the shade cloth. Jenny watches the barometer drop another two points while Kevin struggles to secure the tarp corners against the rising gusts.

The squall hits with sudden force, the wind whipping the garden tarp into a frenzy. Kevin struggles to hold the billowing fabric down on the lee side of the garden, while Jenny works frantically to wire the corners down before the wind rips the material. The tide is rising quickly, and the pressure continues to drop, signaling a heavy storm ahead of them.

Shade cloth's secondary. Cottage and generator first. You take the door and exhaust tape — I'll finish the tarp corners.

Move to the west corner of the garden tarp where the last grommet's flapping, pull the timber batten tight, and drive a stake through the reinforced loop.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's falling faster than the forecast said. Wind's already shifting west — ridge beam leak will come if I don't batten the cottage door and generator exhaust before it hits 975. Jenny's watching the gauge, not the sky. She knows the numbers. She doesn't need me to tell her.

🌿 Jenny12:21

The wire, Kevin, not the stakes! The wind will pull them out like teeth!

Grab the heavy-duty wiring from the workbench and run to the lee side of the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if that tarp rips, the heirloom seedlings are gone before the salt even hits them.

🔧 Kevin12:21

Wire it. I'll meet you on the lee side.

Drop the stake, sprint across the garden to the lee side where the shade cloth's billowing hardest, and grab the flapping corner to hold it down until she gets the wire through.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Stakes pull in saturated clay. Wire through grommets holds. She's moving faster than her ankle should let her.

🌿 Jenny12:23

Hold it steady! Don't let the wind catch the underside now!

Loop the wire through the reinforced grommet and anchor it to the garden wall frame.

💭 peek at the thought
If this tarp fails, the salt will scour the sea beets and I won't have enough seeds left in grandmother's tin.

🔧 Kevin12:23

Got it. Next corner.

Keep the shade cloth pinned flat against the wind with both hands, feet braced in the mud, waiting for her to finish the loop so we can move to the next flapping corner.

💭 peek at the thought
Good anchor point — the wall frame's bolted to bedrock. Wire'll hold if the grommet doesn't tear. My shoulders are taking the load; the gusts want this cloth like a sail.

🌿 Jenny12:25

One more! The tension is starting to rips the fabric!

way the wire across the last gap and twist it tight against the wall bracket.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is screaming. If I don't get this down now, the whole season's work is buried.

🔧 Kevin12:25

Done. Cottage now.

Release the cloth, turn toward the cottage, and start jogging across the garden path — mud sucking at boots — heading for the porch where the generator exhaust tape and door battens wait.

💭 peek at the thought
Fabric's singing under the load — that's the sound before it gives. She's got the twist. One more corner and the shade cloth's done. Then cottage door, generator exhaust, roof tarp's west corner. Barometer's still dropping.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:27

Be right behind you. I'm grabbing the tin.

wipe the salt and grit from my hands and run for the way door.

💭 peek at the thought
The tarp is holding, for now. I need to get the seed tin inside before the squall really hits.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:27

Generator shed's open. Exhaust tape on the bench.

Reach the porch, grab the heavy timber batten leaning against the doorframe, and bolt the cottage door shut — top bolt, bottom bolt, center latch — testing each one with a shoulder shove.

💭 peek at the thought
The tin. Seed tin E. She's taking it to the loft — or the ditch bag. Smart. If the cottage takes water, the seeds go last. My hands are cold from the wire. Barometer's at 976 now. Door first, then exhaust.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:29

I'm in. Lock the door, Kevin.

grab the heirloom seed tin from the shelf and set it on the kitchen table, checking the seal for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is bottoming out. If that wind catches the edge, grandmother's seeds are just compost.
