Securing the Cottage

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage to battle the rising wind and secure the structure as the first rain begins to fall.

Kevin finishes the north ridge intercept trench shoring using the final stainless bolt and greenheart plates. Jenny secures the cottage shutters and battens the loose west corner of the roof tarp to withstand the coming rain.

🔧 Kevin12:29

You take the door battens and the porch shutters. I'll get the generator exhaust and the roof tarp's west corner. Meet back here in ten.

sprint to the generator shed, grab the exhaust tape and ladder, climb onto the roof to secure the loose west corner of the tarp and tape the exhaust flange before the wind shifts

💭 peek at the thought
Generator exhaust tape first — barometer's at 977 and falling, wind shifting west means driving rain at 280 degrees hits that ridge beam leak. Door battens second. Jenny's ankle won't hold her on the roof.

Watch the ladder, Kevin! The stone is already slick!

Grab the heavy hammer and the nails, heading to the porch to starting the shutters into place.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to blow his knees out if he doesn't watch the wind shear.

🔧 Kevin12:31

Exhaust first. Then the tarp. Ladder's got rubber feet — I'm not stupid.

wrap the generator exhaust flange with self-amalgamating tape, overlapping each turn, working fast while the wind flattens the tarp against the roof sheets

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the porch stones are greasy with salt and rain. One slip off that ladder and I'm useless to both of us. Tape the exhaust first, then the tarp corner, then down.

🌿 Jenny12:33

way get it done! The pressure is dropping too fast for talk!

Hammer the first shutter into the frame, squinting against the spray of rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the rubber feet will stop a gale-force gust. Ridiculous.

🔧 Kevin12:33

Kevin — climb down the ladder, move to the west roof corner, peel back the flapping tarp edge, drive timber battens through the grommets into the rafters with the heavy hammer, weighting the line with cribbing stones from the garden pile

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving fast for a bad ankle. Good. The shutters are the easy part — two-by-fours and coach screws into stone. The tarp corner's the bastard. Wind's already peeling it back at the batten line.

🌿 Jenny12:35

Hold the line, Kevin! The wind is taking them already!

Pry the shutter against the stone wall, feeling the wood groan under the pressure.

💭 peek at the thought
If that way rips, the whole kitchen is going to be underwater by dawn.
