A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin and Jenny shared a meal of boiled limpets at the cottage while the barometer rose to 977 hPa and clouds thickened. Kevin reviewed the radio log and confirmed the supply boat ETA of three days at high tide. Jenny examined the seed tin and garden beds, noting the weather turning.

(To herself) Just a bit of wayets and maybe the last potato.

sits on the wooden chair on the porch and traces the edge of the seed tin with her thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is growling again; I need to find something but the pantry is looking thinner every time I check.

How many seed potatoes left in the crate?

Walk to the kitchen, pull out a tin mug, fill it from the rain tank tap, and drink.

💭 peek at the thought
She's talking to the tin like it's a confession. The "last potato" means the seed crate is down to dregs. I should check what's actually left in it before we're eating limpets three meals a day.

🌿 Jenny18:45

Enough for now, if the boat shows up.

looks down at the seed tin, then back at the half-weeded garden behind the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
way to keep us going, but not enough to be careless if the boat is late again.

I'll count the crate after tea. You want the limpets hot or cold?

Set the empty mug on the stove top, pull the pot of boiled limpets off the hook, and spoon a portion into a bowl.

💭 peek at the thought
"If the boat shows up" — that's the hinge everything swings on. Seven days out on the barometer, but the boat's missed three crossings in eleven months. The crate's down to maybe twenty seed potatoes, and we're planting what we can't eat. Need to check the actual count and the damping-off trays before dark.

🌿 Jenny18:47

Hot, please.

reaches for the bowl, watching the clouds thicken over the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
hot is better, I'm too tired to chew through cold rubber today.

🔧 Kevin18:47

Here.

Hand her the bowl with a fork, then ladle the rest into a second bowl for myself and lean against the stove to eat.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the ridge like it might walk over and bite us. Cloud's dropping fast for afternoon — could be the front the barometer's been hinting at. Limpets are protein, at least. I'll eat standing at the stove so I can see the sky too.

🌿 Jenny18:49

Thanks.

takes a bite of the limet, the steam fogging her glasses as she watches him.

💭 peek at the thought
He's quiet today, or the air is heavy with the storm coming.

🔧 Kevin18:49

Cloud's lowering. Might be three days of rain before the boat window.

Finish the limpets, wipe the bowl with a finger, and set it aside. Pull the radio log from the shelf and flip to the last supply boat entry.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching me eat like she's memorising it. The glasses fogging — she hasn't wiped them in ten minutes. Barometer at 977 and rising slow, but that cloud deck on the ridge has the look of something that'll sit on us for days. I should've driven the stone for the French drain yesterday. Now the ground'll be too soft to haul.
