Preparation for the Arrival
The sun remains high as the tide begins its slow turn. Kevin works with the metal while Jenny prepares the tools for the north ridge survey.
The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the south-side shelf. Kevin and Jenny work at the dock, the heat of the afternoon pressing down despite the light onshore breeze. They are focused on the salt-encrusted diesel jerry can, attempting to strip the corrosion and oxidation from the seam to see if the epoxy will hold.
The vinegar isn't biting yet. hand me the brush.
pour vinegar into the jerry can and scrub the seam with a wire brush.

Vinegar won't cut cold salt. Hit it with the torch first. Open the pores.
walk to the workbench, pick up the propane torch, light it, and play the flame along the cracked seam of the diesel can until the metal darkens

Careful with the heat, you'll blister the tin.
step back and watch the heat distribution, sketching the deformation pattern in my notebook.

Watch the colour. Straw yellow at the seam, not blue.
hold the torch tip three inches off the seam, move it steady and slow, watching the metal turn pale gold along the crack

Stop there. If it's hot enough, we need to scrub the oxidation before it sets.
grab the wire brush and clear the surface scale while the metal is still warm.

Kevin — set the torch down on the firebrick, pick up the vinegar jug, and pour a slow stream over the brushed seam while she scrubs

It's reacting. Keep scrubbing until you see the raw metal again.
lean in to watch the reaction, noting the smell of acid and salt.

Kevin — hold the can steady with a gloved hand, tilting it so the vinegar runs the full length of the seam while the brush works

The holes are too deep now. We need to fill before we epoxy.
wipe a clean section and mark the worst pits with my pen, measuring each one.

Bronze-filled epoxy for the deep ones. Straight epoxy over top. I'll mix.
wipe the seam dry with a clean rag, set the can on the bench, and scoop bronze powder into a mixing cup with the epoxy resin
