← Day 791

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the hilltop

Midday work and radio check

Kevin is at the dock inspecting the Yanmar mast bracket alignment; Jenny is at the hilltop scanning the horizon for the supply boat and checking radio reception.

Kevin stands at the dock in the midday heat, checking the tension on the mooring lines as the high tide laps against the pilings. Jenny is on the hilltop, inspecting the garden beds and securing the tarps that the night wind caught. The air is still, but the pressure of the coming supply boat is felt by both.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You crouch at the dinghy transom, sighting along the mast bracket with a straightedge. The upper through-bolt hole shows a 2mm offset to starboard. You have a 10mm stainless rod, a tap set, and greenheart offcuts — enough to shim or re-drill if the tide holds.

🔧 Kevin11:36

Kevin — crouch at the dinghy transom, straightedge against the mast bracket, measuring the offset with a rule. Pull the 10mm stainless rod and tap set from the workshop bench, lay them on the gunwale. Check the tide line on the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
Two millimetres off at the top hole. That's enough to cock the whole bracket and send harmonics through the transom at load. The lower bolts are holding but the bracket's pivoting on that offset. Tide's high now — gives me maybe three hours before the water drops too low to work the transom clean. Need to decide: shim it with greenheart and epoxy, or re-drill and tap oversize. Shim's faster but temporary. Re-drill's permanent but if I snap a tap in stainless at this angle I'm drilling it out by hand.

🔧 Kevin11:40

Kevin — mix a small batch of epoxy in a tin lid. Cut a greenheart shim — tapered, 2mm at the thick end, grain vertical. Coat the shim and the upper mortise face. Drive it home with the mallet, seating the bracket straight.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's still high enough. The offset's consistent — 2mm starboard at the upper hole, lower holes true. Bracket's not bent, just pulled that way by the last storm's load on the forestay. Greenheart shim epoxied in the upper mortise would pull it back true and lock it. Permanent enough for the season. Quickest fix before the supply boat comes.

🔧 Kevin11:44

Kevin — wipe excess epoxy from the bracket mortise. Set the mallet and tin lid aside. Walk up the dock toward the garden path, straightedge tucked under arm.

💭 peek at the thought
Shim's seated. Bracket sits true against the straightedge now — upper hole aligned, no offset. Epoxy needs an hour to kick properly in this heat. Should let it cure before I fire the Yanmar and test at half-throttle. Good window to walk the north ridge beds while it sets, check the tarp corners Jenny mentioned. Kill two birds.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the hilltop

You sit on the hilltop with the shortwave radio, tuned to 8764 kHz, the barometer at 1009 rising in your pocket. The sea is calm, overcast, no sign of the supply boat yet. You'll call the noon check, then walk back to the cottage for the midday meal.

🌿 Jenny11:39

Almost there, Kevin.

stand up, pack the radio and notebook, and begin the descent back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
Three days until the boat. If it doesn't come, I'll have to ration the vinegar again.

🌿 Jenny11:43

Jenny — wipe sweat from my brow and squint toward the north-east.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is shifting. That smudge on the horizon isn't a cloud.

🌿 Jenny11:47

Jenny — make a quick, jagged sketch of the horizon line in the margin of my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
It's too far out to be the boat. Just heat haze and salt.
