NIGHT
The sun has finally dipped below the horizon, but the temperature remains high. The tide has begun to recede, exposing the slippery lower shelves of the tide pools for tomorrow's forage.
The night air is heavy and still, the 28°C heat refusing to break despite the light breeze. The tide is pulling away from the shore, exposing slick rocks and the edges of the pools. Inside the cottage, the smell of boiling limpets and sea beet mixes with the sharp scent of drying mint.
Kevin — clean up the supper things, bank the stove, and step out onto the porch to check the barometer and wind direction before turning in

It's too warm to even sleep. Did you check the window?
Closes the notebook on the final sketch of the sea beet and rubs the lid of the seed tin.

Window's seized solid. Wood's swollen again in this heat. I'll work on it tomorrow.
wipe sweat from my brow and glance toward the mast where the epoxy should be curing in the dark

Just don't let it rain. We need that spar dry for the boat.
Leans back against the stone wall, watching the steam rise from the pot of limpets.

Barometer's steady. Wind's light onshore. Should hold through the night.
pull the porch door shut to keep the heat from drifting back in, then sit on the edge of the bed to pull off my boots

I hope so. I'm too tired to three.
Picks up a fork and reaches for the bowl of limpets and sea beet.
