Rising Tide and Coffee

The heat from the stove begins to fill the kitchen as the kettle starts to whistle. The tide is now noticeably against the dock.

Kevin and Jenny rest at the old shrine as the evening breeze brings a light onshore air. They eat the remaining boiled limpets and tinned mackerel while discussing the supply boat's arrival in four days.

🔧 Kevin03:08

Coffee's coming up.

Pour two mugs of coffee, set one on the table for Jenny, take the other to the porch steps and watch the dock lines.

💭 peek at the thought
The water's boiling. Two mugs. She'll want hers black, no sugar. The tide's pushing hard against the south piling — I can feel the vibration through the floorboards. Tomorrow I'll need to get back out there with the come-along and the greenheart sister plate before the next spring tide.

🌿 Jenny03:09

The water is coming in faster than usual.

Jenny stands up slowly, wincing as she shifts her weight, and walks toward the kitchen to take the mug.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing enough to match the tide, but the smell of coffee is the only anchor right now.

🔧 Kevin03:10

Spring tide. Long fetch from the southwest. Lines are holding.

Hand her the mug, then step back out onto the porch to check the dock tension through the rail.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left side more today. The poultice isn't holding the swelling down like yesterday. Spring tide's pushing harder than the charts said — barometer's steady but the swell's got a long fetch behind it.

🌿 Jenny03:11

It's always the fetch, isn't it?

Jenny wraps both hands around the warm mug, breathing the steam into her face, and looks out at the rising water.

💭 peek at the thought
Four days until the boat, and I'm already counting the salt-rot in the wood.

🔧 Kevin03:12

Mostly. Sometimes it's the bottom. Shoals bend the swell where you don't expect it.

Lean against the porch post, coffee in hand, watching the south dock line groan under a set wave.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking about the tide. She's asking about the letter in my bag. About Tom. About the eleven months I've had to write back and haven't. The fetch is just water and wind — things I can measure, things I can rig against.

🌿 Jenny03:13

As long as the lines hold until the boat.

Jenny takes a slow sip of the coffee, her eyes tracking the way the water curls around the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
I hope the shoals don't take the dock; I just fixed those bolts last month.

🔧 Kevin03:14

They'll hold. Doubled the stern spring, reinforced the ring. Greenheart sister's ready when the tide drops tomorrow.

Finish the coffee, set the mug on the rail, and head down the porch steps toward the dock to check the chafing gear at the waterline.

💭 peek at the thought
Four days. Maybe five. The supply boat's never on time and the trust's radio messages get vaguer every trip. I've got the sister plate cut, the through-bolts staged. But the rot goes deeper than the last inspection showed — the whole landward beam's giving way. If a big set hits at high water before the boat comes...

🌿 Jenny03:15

Don't let the tide pull the stern spring too hard tonight.

Jenny sits heavily on the porch chair, the mug warm in her hands, and watches him move toward the water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so confident in the wood, but the salt eats everything eventually.

🔧 Kevin03:17

Lines are doubled, chocks are in place. Won't let it go.

Check the stern spring tension at the water's edge, then secure the extra chafe guard where the rope eats into the dock cleat.

💭 peek at the thought
Not to pull too hard. As if I haven't been checking every line since dawn. The barometer's holding at 1015, but the swell's got that long southwest fetch building behind it. Tomorrow's high water will hit the dock hard enough to test every repair I've made.

🌿 Jenny03:17

The tide is coming in fast for a spring.

Jenny takes another sip of coffee, her eyes fixed on the dark line where the water meets the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
If the dock goes, we can't get the dinghy out for the boat.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:19

Fetch's got it stacking higher than charts show. South piling's good, but I'm watching the west shores.

Walk back up the dock to check the shear bolts on the mooring ring where oak wedges are holding, then mark the tell-tales with a chalk line to watch overnight.

💭 peek at the thought
Spring tide's got nothing on the fetch from the southwest. Four-foot sets building behind the continental shelf. I can see it in the way the water's breaking - not the clean green of normal swell, but that thick, angry gray that means the seabed's rolling with it. Tomorrow's high water will test every joint I've put in since the storm.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🌿 Jenny03:19

Just hope those wedges hold against the full pull.

Jenny sets the mug down on the table, her ankle throbbing in the heat, and watches the tide climb the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the bolts, I'm looking at the rot in the wood.
