Night watch and the sealed tin

Rain lashes the cottage roof in sustained sheets. The stove burns low, kettle steaming. Kevin sits at the table with the shortwave, Jenny propped in bed with the rusted tin E on her lap. The barometer reads 1014 hPa and rising. The tide is high and still climbing. Wind gusts shake the shutters.

The morning air is heavy and still, the wet season heat clinging to the cottage as the tide sits high. Kevin heads out to the dock to check the structural integrity of the landward beam before the tide turns, while Jenny remains inside, battling a lingering fever and a throbbing ankle as she focuses on the task of opening the heirloom seed tin.

Kettle's hot. Want a mug before I walk the dock?

Pour two mugs of coffee from the steaming kettle, set one on the bedside table within Jenny's reach, keep one at the table beside the shortwave.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer rising with high tide still climbing — unusual. Means the low's passing north of us, dragging the swell in its wake. Dock'll take the hit in about two hours when the tide turns. Should check the mooring ring bolts and the new sister brace while there's light left. Jenny's got the tin. She's been turning it over in her hands for an hour. Won't open it till she's ready. Coffee first.

way. Just... don't stay out long.

Trace the rusted edge of the tin lid with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
The fever is making the room tilt, but the tin is the only thing that feels real right now.

Back before the tide turns.

Take the coffee mug, pull the oilskin from the hook by the door, step out onto the porch and secure the latch against the wind, then walk down the path toward the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not sleeping. The tin's a weight she's carrying — has been since the crate washed up. Could pry it now, save her the anticipation, but that's not mine to decide. She'll open it when the storm breaks or the boat comes, whichever's first. Coffee'll cool in the mug. Dock needs eyes on it before full dark.

Jenny — pull the blanket tighter around my ankle and watch the rain blur the window.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in three days, I'm going to run out of antibiotics anyway.
