The First Rain Breaks
Kevin and Jenny retreat under the porch overhang as the first heavy drops fall. The smell of dry earth turning to mud fills the small space.
Kevin hauled a greenheart sister plate up the slick north ridge path and drove the last 150mm stainless through-bolt to shore the intercept trench, then descended to secure the garden tarp with bamboo stakes and check the cracked diesel can. Jenny remained at the garden, re-debriding her infected ankle and applying a fresh sea beet-mint-honey poultice while monitoring the tarp and the weeping ridge cracks.
The garden is turning too fast, Kevin. We're losing it.
Sit on the way step, clutching my throbbing ankle, and watch the rain wash the silt off the garden wall.

We'll save what we can, love.
walk to the cottage door, grab the spare tarp from the hook, return to the garden wall, unroll and secure it over the seedling rows with the timber strips.

It's not enough for a wind this strong.
Lean my head back against the rough stone and close my eyes, trying to ignore the fever spike.

The wall's two courses higher now. The beds are raised. The drainage trench is cut. It's more than we had last season.
check the tarp corners are weighted with cribbing stones, walk to the north ridge edge, scan the intercept trench for new seepage.

The soil is weeping, Kevin. Look at the cracks on the ridge.
Wipe the sweat from my eyes with a shaking hand and watch the water artwork to pool in the weeds.

The intercept trench is taking water. Toe seepage is up. We shore it at first light — greenheart plates, the last through-bolt.
walk the north ridge line, count the active weep points, mark the worst three with red wax from the tin in my pocket.

We don't have the strength to move those plates tomorrow.
Reach into my pocket and touch the rusted edge of the tin, feeling the cold metal against my palm.

I'll move them. You hold the line here — garden, ankle, radio watch.
walk back to the dock, unstrap the two greenheart sister plates from under the eaves, shoulder one, start hauling it up the ridge path.

Be careful, the path is turning to grease.
Wrap the wet poultice around my ankle and watch his silhouette disappear into the grey.

Boots are holding. Rope's at the top if I need it.
climb the ridge path steady, test each footfall on the wet clay, reach the intercept trench, set the first greenheart plate against the weeping face, drive the 150mm stainless through-bolt through the pre-drilled hole into the shoring timbe

Hurry back, the tarp's flapping and I'm freezing without the stove running.
Pull my knees to my chest and sit cross-legged in the mud, watching the water carve channels in the garden bed.

I'll bring the stove back before you freeze. Hold the line on the tarp with those bamboo stakes.
climb down the ridge path, grab the bamboo stakes from the irrigation setup, walk to the garden, secure the tarp corners with the stakes driven deep into the weeping clay, return to the cottage, check the diesel can for leak progression.
