Night watch and the chick

Kevin and Jenny sit at the cottage table in the lantern light. The seabird chick lies in a box lined with cloth on the floor, peeping weakly. The shortwave radio sits charged beside the ditch bag. Outside, the wind has dropped to a light onshore breeze. The tide is low.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🌿 Jenny12:05

It's too low, Kevin. The parents won't make it back up.

Jenny wipes the sweat from her brow with a shaking hand and reaches for the bowl of leftover cold broth.

💭 peek at the thought
The chick is going to drown if we don't move it now, and my ankle feels like it's being squeezed by pliers.

I'll take it up. You stay here, keep the broth down.

walk to the box, pick up the chick gently in both hands, head for the cliffs

💭 peek at the thought
The chick's too weak to climb back to the ledge tonight, and the parents won't descend to the box. If we don't get it up before dawn, the gulls will take it. My shoulder's still stiff from the swim but the path's solid — I know every handhold.

🌿 Jenny12:07

Be careful... the rocks are slick.

Jenny takes a small, painful sip of the cold broth, watching him through the window.

💭 peek at the thought
If he drops it, I don't have the energy to find it.

🔧 Kevin12:07

I know the holds.

step out onto the porch, pull the door shut behind me, start up the cliff path toward the nesting ledge

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the slick rock — last rain made the upper traverse treacherous. But the chick won't survive the night in the box. I've climbed this face in worse. Just need to move deliberate.
