A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin worked through the heat on the north ridge, securing greenheart plates to stabilize the acidic soil. Jenny spent the afternoon at the cottage sketching the morphology of sea beets while managing her swelling ankle.

🌿 Jenny15:51

I'm coming in, Kevin.

Sit on the porch steps, rubbing the swollen ankle, and watch the light shift over the garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the tide, and the hunger is heavy. I need to check the water again before the sun drops.

🔧 Kevin15:51

Kettle's on. Mug on the table.

pour hot water into the tin mug, set it on the porch rail within her reach

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slower today. The ankle's not right, and she knows it. I should've checked the dressing before she walked the cliff path.

🌿 Jenny15:53

Thanks.

Reach for the mug, wrapping cold hands around the warm metal, and stare at the half-cleared weeds in the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always there, moving like a ghost while I'm too tired to even thank him properly.

🔧 Kevin15:53

Tea's good for the ankle.

grab the honey jar from the shelf, drizzle a spoonful into her mug

💭 peek at the thought
The garden's still half-weed, but she's here. That's something.

🌿 Jenny15:55

Maybe it is.

Take a slow sip of the tea, feeling the steam hit my face, and look at the tin of seeds sitting on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks honey will fix an infection, but it's the salt and the heat getting to me.

🔧 Kevin15:55

Seed tin's still sealed. Grandmother's.

lean against the doorframe, arms crossed, watching the garden

💭 peek at the thought
She's looking at the seed tin. The letter to Tom's in the dry bag under the bunk. She hasn't asked about it since the storm.

🌿 Jenny15:57

I know.

Trace the rusted edge of the tin with my thumb, then look away back at the weeds.

💭 peek at the thought
If I open them, I might lose them, and the soil here isn't ready for them yet, is it?

🔧 Kevin15:57

Weeds won't pull themselves.

step down onto the path, pull the hand fork from the tool rack by the door

💭 peek at the thought
She knows about the tin. She knows about Tom. She knows I haven't planted the sensory garden I talked about for eleven months. She doesn't push.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny15:59

I'll help in a minute.

Set the mug down, wince as I shift, and watch him start digging into the dirt.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, and the island is taking everything back while I just sit here watching.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin15:59

Take your time.

drive the fork into the first weed cluster beside the tomato stakes, lever the root ball loose

💭 peek at the thought
She'll sit there until the tea's gone and the ankle throbs less. I've got the fork, the weeds, and the silence. Good enough for now.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:01

Don't overdo it.

Reach for my notebook and pencil, starting to sketch the way the sea beet is choking the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too patient, it makes me feel the weight of all the unfinished tasks.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:02

Noted.

toss the first root mass onto the path, move to the next cluster near the basil bed

💭 peek at the thought
She draws what she sees. Sea beet choking the wall, the crack in the north ridge, the way the light hits the garden at 1500 hours. I pull weeds.
