Midday Heat and Rising Tide

Kevin wipes sweat from his brow as the dock plates settle into place, while Jenny rests in the cool shade of the ridge, her ankle throbbing in the heat.

Kevin drilled the final two pilot holes in the port stringer and test-fitted the greenheart sister plate; it aligned cleanly. He carried the bolts and torque wrench up the ridge trail to Jenny, who had documented a 15 cm extension of the north ridge crack with active clay weeping at two new points. The ground proved too soft for the wheelbarrow, so Kevin left it on the dock.

Port plates shifted aft. Three fresh pilot holes drilled. Two more to go.

Bore remaining two pilot holes in port stringer at new bolt pattern, clear swarf, test-fit greenheart sister plate against shifted holes.

💭 peek at the thought
Port stringer shift bought us solid wood but cost half the morning. Need to finish boring the new pattern before the tide turns and the drill bit binds in wet rot. Jenny's on the ridge alone with a bad ankle and a crack that's still moving. Should've sent the radio with her.

🌿 Jenny13:53

The north ridge crack moved another fifteen centimeters. The clay is weeping, Kevin.

Jenny leans heavily on her driftwood cane, wincing as her weight shifts onto her ankle, and sketches the new fissure line in her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The ridge is moving faster than I can draw it, and he's looking at the bolts instead of the horizon.

Copy. Two new weep points?

Finish boring last two pilot holes in port stringer, test-fit greenheart plate, then secure wheelbarrow and tools and walk up to north ridge to assess crack extension and weeping clay with Jenny.

💭 peek at the thought
Fifteen centimetres in a day. That's not creep, that's a slide waiting to happen. She shouldn't be up there on one ankle. The ridge goes, the garden goes, the cottage foundation gets undermined. Need the intercept trench finished and the sheet piling driven before the next rain. Barometer's still rising but that sky's lying.

🌿 Jenny13:56

Jenny is quiet for a moment.

flagged: empty

💭 peek at the thought
If the ridge goes, the cottage goes with it, and these seeds go into the salt water.나SAY: No, three distinct points. The soil is saturated; it's not holding the way it did last week.나DO: Jenny kneels at the edge of the fissure, ignoring the sharp spike in her ankle, and presses a finger into the damp earth to test the stability.

🔧 Kevin13:56

Last two holes. Then I'm coming up.

Drill final two pilot holes in port stringer at shifted pattern, blow swarf clear, test-fit greenheart sister plate alignment, then gather 150mm stainless through-bolts, washers, nyloc nuts, torque wrench, and 19mm socket from wheelbarrow a

💭 peek at the thought
She's not saying it but I hear it: the ridge is moving faster than we can work. Ankle's slowing her down. She hates that more than the pain. I'll bore the last holes, drive the bolts, then get up there. The trench can wait one more tide cycle if the shoring holds. But if that crack hits the garden wall...

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny13:57

Be careful. The ground is too soft today for the weight of the equipment.

Jenny wipes the grit from her palms on her jeans and watches the clouds thicken, waiting for the rain that she knows is coming.

💭 peek at the thought
The ridge is breathing under my feet and he's still worried about bolt specs.

🔧 Kevin13:58

Leaving the barrow. Bolts and wrench by hand.

Set wheelbarrow back on stable dock planking, pocket three 150mm stainless through-bolts with washers and nyloc nuts, hang 19mm socket and torque wrench from belt loops, walk up ridge approach trail to Jenny's position.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The clay's saturated. Wheelbarrow weight on the ridge approach could trigger a slump. Leave the heavy gear at the dock. Carry bolts and tools by hand. She's watching the sky like she's reading a chart — she sees what the barometer isn't showing yet.

🌿 Jenny13:59

Look at the way the clay is forming. It's not just surface tension.

Jenny stands up slowly, hand white on the grip of her cane, and points to the widening gap near the roots of the stunted trees.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the hardware while the island is literally sliding away.
