North ridge assessment and emergency shoring

Kevin and Jenny stand on the north ridge at the crack line as evening light fails. The clay weeps at two active points, the ground soft underfoot. Kevin has three 150mm stainless through-bolts, washers, nyloc nuts, a torque wrench and 19mm socket. Jenny's notebook shows the 15 cm extension with red wax marks at the new weep points. Cloud cover is total, barometer steady at 1036 hPa, tide high. They must decide whether to attempt emergency shoring now or wait for morning.

Kevin and Jenny ascended to the north cliffs to stabilize the widening fissure on the ridge before the evening. Kevin managed to secure the tarp and place stones to divert the runoff, while Jenny struggled with the incline and her ankle, failing to monitor the tension effectively.

Bolts won't hold this. Wrong tool. We need planks driven vertical, deadman anchors upslope. That's morning work. Tonight we mark the active weeps with stakes, run a tarp upslope to divert surface water, and get off the slide before dark.

drive three stakes at the new weep points with red flagging, unroll the heavy canvas tarp from the garden stores upslope of the crack, secure its upper edge with timber strips and cribbing stones to shed water away from the slide face, then

💭 peek at the thought
The crack's widened since noon. Two active weeps means water's moving through the clay lens, not just surface seepage. If we drive sheets tonight we're working by headlamp on ground that's already moving. But waiting means another tide cycle on saturated clay. The bolts are for the dock, not the ridge — wrong length, wrong application. We need greenheart planks and deadmen, not through-bolts into sliding soil.

The soil is saturated, Kevin. It's not holding the weight of the seeds or us.

lean heavily on the driftwood cane, pull the rusted seed tin from my pocket, and begin the slow descent toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The ridge is moving faster than I can document. If I don't plant those seeds now, the island will swallow the whole history anyway.

🔧 Kevin14:02

Take the tin. I'll bring the wheelbarrow down, secure the tarp edges with stones. Meet you at the cottage.

gather the timber strips and cribbing stones from the garden stores, weight the tarp's lower edge along the crack line, coil the torque wrench and socket back onto the belt, walk the ridge trail down to the dock, retrieve the wheelbarrow, t

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The ground's turning to soup under us. Tin's heavy in her pocket — heirloom tomato and sea beet seeds, viable per this morning. She's carrying the future garden down a failing slope on a bad ankle. My bolts are useless here. The ridge needs drainage and deadmen, not through-bolts into sliding clay.

🌿 Jenny14:03

I'll be there. Don't let the tarp slip.

grip the cane tight, adjust the weight of the seed tin against my hip, and pivot toward the path to the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
My own is throbbing with every step, a hot pulse that matches the tide. I need to get to the flat ground.

🔧 Kevin14:04

It'll hold.

walk the dock planks to the wheelbarrow, lift the handles, roll it back up the ridge trail to the crack line, position it upslope of the tarp's upper edge as a dead weight anchor, check the timber battens are seated and the cribbing stones

💭 peek at the thought
She moves slow, deliberate. Ankle's holding but the cane takes real weight. The tin bumps her hip with each step — she knows exactly what's in it, every seed variety, every planting window. The ridge can wait till morning. She can't.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:05

Watch the tension. The soil is still shifting.

stop to look back over my shoulder at the ridge, noting the slight widening of the fissure, then limp toward the cottage light.

💭 peek at the thought
If that anchor fails, the whole ridge goes, and I can't lose the survey data.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:07

Understood. I'll secure the ridge markers proper by first light.

place three stone cairns at the new weep points marked with red wax, stake the canvas tarp's upper edge with the greenheart offcuts, roll the wheelbarrow down to the dock and leave it there for morning's work, then walk back to the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the shift — I saw it myself, just now, a new hairline crack opening near the weep points. The tarp's holding but the ground's still moving like water. Morning's our only play. I can't risk both of them down that slope tonight.
