The Rising Tide Shift
Kevin returns from the shore with the herbs just as the first heavy drops of rain fall from the grey air.
The heavy humid air finally breaks as a warm, fat rain begins to drum against the garden tarp, bringing the scent of parched earth and salt. The tide is pushing steadily inland, threatening the lower shelves of the garden as the wind picks up, rattling the spruce mast.
Jenny, look - the rain's starting. I've got the sea beet and mint ready for the poultice.
Head up the garden path with damp sea beet leaves and fresh mint sprigs, rain beginning to speckle my jacket, heading toward the cottage where Jenny tends to her swollen ankle.

Put them on the table. I need to get inside before the garden turns to mud.
Jenny wipes sweat and rain from her brow, wincing as she shifts weight off her infected ankle, reaching for the seed tin.

Right. Inside it is. I'll secure the garden area - check the wall integrity while you treat that ankle properly.
Place the sea beet and mint on the cottage table, then walk toward the garden wall to inspect the compromised sections, rain intensifying as I check for soil movement along the north ridge.

Don't stay out there too long, the ground is going to get slick under your feet.
Jenny sits on the kitchen stool, breathing through her nose as she unfastens the ankle brace to prepare the antiseptic and the poultice.

I'll be quick. Just need to check the wall - if there's slippage up there, we lose our drainage diversion.
Walk quickly but carefully toward the garden wall base, keeping boots planted firmly on the grass strip, then check the north wall's foundation for cracks or soil movement as rain begins to patter harder.

Jenny, the wall's holding - barely. We need to get inside and secure the tarp before this gets worse.
Jenny retrieves the sea beet and mint from the cottage table, mixing them with honey in a small bowl while pressing the poultice firmly against her infected ankle, then wrapping it tightly with gauze.

Good. I'll secure the tarp and check the north ridge soil pockets - if that third pocket starts weeping, we need to divert before it reaches the wall.
Return to the cottage, grab the spare tarp and timber battens, then walk deliberately toward the north ridge access path, watching for mudslides in the growing darkness as I check the soil stability markers.

Be careful up there. The earth is going to turn to soup faster than you think.
Jenny leans back against the counter, wincing as she tightens the wrap on her ankle, watching the rain finally break against the windowpane.

I'll be down there five minutes tops. If the ridge starts moving, I'm radioing the trust - this isn't waiting for the supply boat.
Head toward the north ridge access path, securing the garden tarp along the ridge drainage bed with timber battens and oak stakes, then check the third soil pocket for active seepage as I work against the rising water.

Kevin, wait - I need to finish treating the infection first. The antibiotics course isn't complete yet.
Jenny carefully repositions the gauze on her swollen ankle, checking for signs of improvement, then heads toward the door to intercept Kevin before he commits to the ridge path.
