The tide claims the garden

The rain has intensified into a steady downpour as the salt water reaches the edge of the lower garden beds.

Kevin and Jenny attempted to divert rising groundwater from the lower garden beds using a tarp and sandbags. The pressure of the water was too great for the stakes to hold in the saturated soil, and the seepage bypassed the barrier.

🌿 Jenny15:03

Kevin! Get the tarp! The lower bed is coming in too fast!

Limps toward the garden, shifting her weight to the good leg while reaching for the heavy plastic sheeting.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is going to drown the seeds before they even take root.

🔧 Kevin15:05

On it!

sprint toward the garden tarp battens, grab two additional timber strips and extend the heavy-duty tarp deployment over the lower beds by securing with new bamboo stakes driven at corner reinforcement points.

💭 peek at the thought
The north ridge crack's seepage pattern checks out - salt concentration rising in the lower beds means we need that tarp extended further down. Good thing I pre-positioned the timber battens for exactly this scenario.

🌿 Jenny15:05

Watch the south corner! The wind is catching it under the flap!

Kneels in the mud, gritting as her ankle flares, and presses her weight against the tarp to hold it while he works.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't pin the edge down, the wind will rip it like a sail.

🔧 Kevin15:17

Hold on, I'll get the sandbags!

sprint to the south corner of the garden, grab two ironbark chocks and drive them under the tarp's edge while securing with additional timber battens to prevent wind lift.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's catching under the south corner flap - need to secure that immediately before it tears. Her ankle's flaring but she's holding it down anyway, just like she did on the north ridge when the rain hit.

🌿 Jenny15:19

way! The water's already overtopping the stone wall!

Presses her palms against the slick plastic, breathing through the sharp heat in her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tarp rips, the whole heirloom crop is lost to the salt wash.

🔧 Kevin15:21

I'll shore up the wall base, you get the copper spillway extended!

grab the lead sheeting and bitumen membrane from the porch storage, drive copper stakes along the wall's base to create a temporary diversion channel directing water away from the lower beds.

💭 peek at the thought
Water's overtopping the stone wall - the salt seepage from the north ridge is accelerating through the garden beds. Need to divert before it reaches the heirloom seedlings.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🌿 Jenny15:22

I'm trying! The water is moving too fast!

Crawls toward the copper rolls, fingers trembling as she begins to drag the heavy metal into the mud.

💭 peek at the thought
I need to get that channel clear before the soil turns to soup.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin15:25

Let me help with the lead - you handle the stakes

use the garden fork to lever the ironbark chocks under the lead sheeting while Jenny secures them with the copper stakes, creating a sandbag-style berm along the wall base to slow the seepage.

💭 peek at the thought
Her fingers are trembling - the infection's flaring again with this stress. Need to get those copper sheets positioned before the water washes away the soil entirely.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🌿 Jenny15:27

Watch the pressure! The water is already shifting!

Hammers the copper stakes into the saturated earth, each impact sending a spike of pain through her throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If this holds for just a few hours, the seeds might survive the night.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin15:31

I'll hold the lead steady while you drive the stakes

wedge the lead sheeting against the wall base with the garden fork, then use my boot to press it down as Jenny hammers the copper stakes vertically every twelve inches along the diversion channel.

💭 peek at the thought
The water's shifting under pressure - we need to get those copper sheets fully seated before it undermines everything. Her ankle's taking hits every swing.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🌿 Jenny15:35

It's not holding! The current is pushing too hard!

Lean her full weight into the hammer, gritting her teeth as the metal finally bites into the mud.

💭 peek at the thought
If the lead slips, the salt water will go right over the top.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin15:49

Get the lime sacks! We need ballast!

grab the two burlap sacks of crushed lime from the porch, drive them end-over-end along the copper diversion channel as ballast while extending the garden tarp further down using the bamboo stakes already deployed.

💭 peek at the thought
Current's too strong - need to add weight and re-extend the tarp further down to catch the overflow before it hits the seed beds.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🌿 Jenny15:50

way! The water is already under the tarp!

Limps to the edge of the bed, reaching to pull the corner of the plastic down against the rising surge.

💭 peek at the thought
If the weight isn't heavy enough, the tide will sweep the whole thing away.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin15:57

Hold that corner - I'll drive the rebar anchors!

grab the two curved rebar stakes from the crate, push them through the tarp's edge beneath the waterline at the south corner, then bend the protruding ends outward to lock the plastic in place against the surge pressure.

💭 peek at the thought
Water's already under the tarp - the surge is too strong for surface-only containment. Need to anchor it below the waterline and redirect the flow.
