Evening Storm Approaches

The sky darkens a bruised purple as the first heavy drops of rain hit the hot wood. The tide is now high, and the wind has picked up from the east.

The air is heavy at the old shrine as the pressure holds steady despite the humidity. Kevin and Jenny monitor the barometer, waiting for the first sign of the coming storm. Jenny rests her ankle, throbbing in the heat of the wet season evening.

🌿 Jenny16:53

It's coming in, Kevin. Get the charts inside!

tucks her notebook into her waterproof bag and limps toward the cottage, leaning heavily on the heavily cane.

💭 peek at the thought
way, some rain to break the heat, but it's going to ruin my sketches.

🔧 Kevin16:54

Right behind you.

grab the storm lantern off the porch table and the tin mugs, head for the cottage door

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's hitting hard already. She's moving slow on that ankle. Need to secure the porch first, then get the charts and radio gear under cover before the wind tears anything loose.

🌿 Jenny16:55

Close the latch tight! The wind is already turning.

steps over the threshold and drops the way way with a heavy thud, groaning as she shifts her weight off the infected ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the water gets through the door again, I'm going to lose my mind.

🔧 Kevin16:55

Got it.

pull the cottage door shut hard, throw the iron latch, shoot the top and bottom bolts, then turn to face the room

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the bad leg hard. The groan wasn't just tiredness. Once the door's battened I need to check the dressing and get the antibiotics in her.

🌿 Jenny16:57

Check the way. I want to know if the pressure is actually dropping.

leans against the heavy kitchen table, breathing through her nose while she stares at the swollen, red skin of her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
way, the inside is dry, but my leg feels like it's on fire.

🔧 Kevin16:58

1028 and steady when I came in. But that was ten minutes ago.

cross to the bulkhead, tap the barometer glass, read the needle

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's on the bulkhead by the radio. Quick glance tells us what we're in for.

🌿 Jenny16:59

The wind's from the east and it's picking up. I said this would happen if the barometer dropped.

pushes herself up with one hand on the table, the other supporting her ankle as she shifts toward the doorway where the storm lantern sits.

💭 peek at the thought
way, maybe the tide's turning faster than I thought.

🔧 Kevin17:00

Dropped to 1024. You were right. East wind backing northeast — we're in the dangerous quadrant. Sit down, Jen. Let me light the lantern and get the meds.

strike a match, light the storm lantern wick, adjust the flame steady, then move to the medical kit on the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
Needle's moved. 1024 now. Dropping four millibars in ten minutes. That's not a front — that's a bomb. She's right and she's hurting. Get her sat down and the lantern lit before the power fails.
