Evening Tide Prep

The sun begins to dip, casting long shadows across the garden. The heat remains oppressive, and the tide reaches the lower dock rings.

Kevin monitored the shortwave radio through the evening, logging only a fragmentary news report about hacked air alert apps and the falling barometer. Jenny remained at the cottage, sketching salt gland morphology on sea beet leaves and tending her infected ankle with a fresh poultice.

Engine checks out. Clean through the range. Prop shaft's holding the sleeve.

Walk up to the cottage porch and set the 19mm wrench on the rail, then pour two mugs of water from the tank.

💭 peek at the thought
Good run today. Engine held. Vibration's gone. But the heat's brutal and that barometer's still dropping. Need to get the trench shored before whatever's coming hits. And Jenny's ankle — she's tough but that swelling's not right. Four days to supply boat. Too long if infection spreads.

🌿 Jenny17:45

Check the tank again tomorrow. It looks lower than yesterday.

Jenny takes the mug, takes a long drink, and begins to sketch the erosion lines on the south slope in her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
Four days own the boat. If it doesn't come, I'm running out of antibiotic and hope.

🔧 Kevin17:49

Will do. Overflow channel held last storm but the epoxy's old. Might be seeping at the foundation.

Lean against the porch post, watching her sketch, then glance at the barometer on the kitchen shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
Tank was 391 this morning. Could be evaporation in this heat, or that overflow channel's weeping again. She's sharp to catch it. I'll check at first light before the trench work.

🌿 Jenny17:49

I'll check the weeping points in the morning. The ankle is pulsing anyway.

Jenny stops her pencil, rubs the swollen skin of her ankle, and looks out at the half-weeded garden.

💭 peek at the thought
If the foundation goes, the whole north wall follows. I need to check those greenheart plates again.

🔧 Kevin17:51

Infection's bad news. Can't risk it getting systemic. I'll catch fish tomorrow, get you proper food.

Walk to the garden and kick at a dead weed, then check the water test kit remaining strips.

💭 peek at the thought
Pulse means infection's moving. Salt air and dehydration's not helping. That poultice might sting tonight. Need to get her some fresh limpets for protein and keep her off that ankle.

🌿 Jenny17:51

way is fine Kevin. I just need the poultice to stay clean.

Jenny goes quiet, staring at the tin of grandmother's seeds on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks fish will fix a deep infection. I need the antibiotics from the boat to stay dry.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:53

Good. Keep that poultice clean, yeah? I'll reinforce the north slope shoring tomorrow while you're resting.

Walk to the tin, run a finger along the rusted seam where I noted it's compromised, then replace it carefully on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
She's holding it together but that look at the tin... Grandmother's seeds might be our last insurance if this gets worse. Need to make sure they stay dry and viable.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🌿 Jenny17:53

I'll be careful.

Jenny reaches out and pulls the tin slightly away from the edge of the table, shielding it with her hand.

💭 peek at the thought
He's touching the tin. He doesn't know how fragile the seeds are inside.

🔧 Kevin17:54

Night's cooling. Get some rest. I'll take first watch on the radio.

Step off the porch toward the dock, hand on the radio shack door, pausing to glance back at her.

💭 peek at the thought
She knows what that tin means. What it cost to save it. We both do. She's protecting it like she protects everything here. Even the things that hurt.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:55

See you at breakfast.

Jenny watches him go, her hand still resting on the cold metal of the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, the seeds will rot in this humidity anyway.

🔧 Kevin17:56

Kevin — open the radio shack door, switch on the shortwave, and settle in to monitor 2182 through the evening.

💭 peek at the thought
Four days. Radio check at 0800. Trench reinforcement at first light. Fish if the tide's right. Keep her ankle clean. Keep the tin dry. Keep us here.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:57

Jenny — jenny picks up her pencil and begins to draw the morphology of the salt-crusted leaves, focusing on the way the decay eats the edges.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence of the island is heavier than the heat. I can hear the tide coming in the rocks.
