A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin reinforced the north ridge garden tarp with new battens and guy lines using the half-inch three-strand rope, securing the heirloom seed beds against rising wind. Jenny debrided her infected ankle and applied a fresh sea beet and mint poultice, then began sketching erosion patterns on the south slope before the light faded.

The barometer is dropping fast. We should check the garden tarps again.

Sit on the porch steps, prop my ankle up on a crate, and watch the clouds thicken over the south slope.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the pulse, and the sky is turning that heavy, bruised color. I need to sit before the rain starts.

Aye. North ridge first. That tarp's got the most sail area.

She's right. The needle's been sliding all morning. Tarps held last blow but the wind's shifting south — garden wall takes it full.

Take the spare battens from the shed. And grab that coil of half-inch three-strand from the crate - we'll need it for emergency guy lines if the wind catches the tarp.

Remove my left boot, unwrap the gauze, and squeeze a fresh paste of sea beet and mint into the wound. The antibiotics are nearly finished anyway.

💭 peek at the thought
North ridge first - always the most exposed. His boots crunching over the wet grass sounds like he's walking on thin ice.

Got it. I'll rig some proper guys for the tarp corners. You should sit still and let that poultice work.

She's right about the battens. And that coil - I can splice some proper guys from it. Good thing I checked the inventory when I recovered that crate.

Just make sure the knots are tight. If that way goes, the grandmother's seeds will be lost to the mud.

Lean back against the whitewashed stone and start own the erosion patterns on the south slope before the light fails completely.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a poultice fixes a deep-seated ache. The salt air is getting into everything, even the bone.

They'll hold. I'll use timber hitches on the stakes and rolling hitches on the guy lines — adjustable under load. Start on the north ridge, then the south slope.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The south slope tarp covers the heirloom beds. If that goes, the seed stock goes with it. Knots need to hold in wet clay.
