Midday at the keeper's cottage

Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch with mugs of limpet broth. The shortwave crackles on the table between them. Jenny's ankle is elevated on a cushion, fresh poultice applied. Kevin has the supply boat's ETA note in hand: three days at high tide, two-hour window. The barometer still reads 1028 hPa, steady. The fog has lifted enough to see the garden wall and the dinghy at its mooring.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

Three days. We need to be ready for the boat before the weather turns.

Take a sip of the broth and watch the horizon over the south slope.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is holding for now, but that north wall is weeping. If the rain gets heavier before the boat comes, the garden is gone.

Aye. Dinghy's ready. Mooring's doubled, engine's clean. Garden wall needs the last through-bolt on the northeast shoring before the tide pushes back. And the crate.

finish broth, set mug down, stand and stretch shoulder, walk to porch edge looking south toward garden wall and dock

💭 peek at the thought
Three days. The barometer's steady but that means nothing here — seen it drop twenty millibars in an hour. The dinghy's sound, engine's holding, mooring's doubled. Garden wall's the weak point; new weeping at the north face means the intercept trench isn't catching it all. Need to shore that before the boat comes. And the crate — still haven't opened the waterlogged one from the south beach. Could be parts we need, could be rot. Jenny's ankle's improving but she's not weight-bearing proper yet. Two-hour window at high tide means we hit it exact or wait another cycle.

🌿 Jenny17:25

I'll check the bolts again after the rain stops. way ankle is screaming.

Reaches the tin of seeds in my lap and traces the rusted edge with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
The crate is always the crate. If the wall goes, the seeds from grandmother's garden will just rot in the salt mud.

Don't. Bolts can wait. Ankle first.

reach over and cover her hand on the tin, thumb pressing gentle on her wrist — checking pulse, temperature — then let go and turn back to the horizon

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring it bad. The red streaking's gone but the heat's still there under the poultice. Metronidazole course finished this morning — four days to the boat, no more antibiotics unless we crack the buried cache. She won't say how much it hurts. Tin E's bottom seam is gone, rust flaking into the seeds every time it moves. She knows it too.

🌿 Jenny17:27

It's not just the bolts. The soil is shifting.

Pulls the tin closer to her chest and stares at the weeds in the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he can fix everything with a bolt and a wrench. The island is moving under us.

🔧 Kevin17:27

How far?

turn fully, eyes on the garden wall's north end where the soil meets stone

💭 peek at the thought
She's felt it. The clay's moving under the garden wall — knew the trench wasn't deep enough on the north end. Water's finding the old fracture line. If the wall goes, the tomato rows go with it. Three days. The last through-bolt's staged at the east shutter. Greenheart sister plates are under the eaves. Need the mattock, the auger, the torque wrench. And her ankle means she can't do the digging.
