Afternoon storm prep

Kevin returns the dinghy to the dock as the wind begins to shift. They meet at the cottage to discuss the approaching supply boat arrival.

Kevin secured the radio mast with spare rope and turnbuckles while Jenny inspected the seed trays, finding several cells lost to damping-off fungus. Kevin lightly aerated soil around surviving seedlings and applied a thin layer of crushed charcoal from the lime sack.

The barometer is at 978. We need to secure the shade cloth before the wind shifts north-west.

stand up slowly, wincing at the ankle, and walk toward the kitchen to check the water tank level.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if the boat doesn't make it in nine days, I'll be out of antibiotics for this ankle.

Northwest means we'll get the full blast. Cover the garden first, then the shed.

Walk to the dock, grab the extra rope from the crate, and start doubling the shade cloth lines while Jenny checks the water.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer dropping fast - this squall line's coming in quicker than I thought. That vibration in the Yanmar was probably prop shaft play, but right now Jenny needs me grounded, not in the dinghy.

I'll handle the seed trays. Just make sure the radio mast is braced so it doesn't catch.

rub the side of my ankle with a grimace, then head to the porch to inspect the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
If that wind picks up any more, it'll rips the way off the wall before I can get it staked.

Right. I'll get the mast braced while you tend to the seedlings.

Walk to the radio mast base and inspect the guy wires, then secure them with the spare rope and turnbuckles from the crate.

💭 peek at the thought
The radio mast needs storm bracing - that's on my list but not urgent compared to the shade cloth.

🌿 Jenny13:01

I'm checking the trays now. The humidity is too high—we might be losing the small ones.

walk to the garden bed, shifting my weight to my good leg, and kneel by the seed trays.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky is turning the color of a bruise. If this storm hits before the boat arrives, the sea beets are gone.

🔧 Kevin13:03

Bring me a clean trowel from the shed. I'll amend the soil with some charcoal.

Grab the trowel from beside the shed and return to the garden trays to help with soil aeration.

💭 peek at the thought
Damping-off spreading fast in this humidity - I should have built proper ventilation into those trays.

🌿 Jenny13:03

The trowel is by the door. Be careful with the seedlings; the roots are already stressed.

limp to the shed, retrieve the trowel, and hand it to him without looking up.

💭 peek at the thought
way thinks he's helping, but he's just in the way of the light.

🔧 Kevin13:04

Got it. Working the surface only.

Lightly aerate the soil surface around each seedling with the trowel, being careful not to disturb roots, then sprinkle a thin layer of crushed charcoal from the lime sack over the damp soil.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right - these seedlings are fragile. Work gentle or lose the whole batch.
