Evening meal and supply boat prep

Kevin and Jenny sit at the cottage table with tin mugs of limpet broth and the last of the corned beef. The supply crate inventory list lies between them. The barometer reads 983 hPa steady. The tide is high and slack. The generator hums from the shed. They review what to stow, what to burn, and what to ask the supply boat captain for in three days.

The heavy air in the cottage is stifling, the 31°C heat pressing down despite the grey sky. Jenny sits at the table, the rusted tin of heirloom seeds held tightly in her lap, her thumb tracing the jagged edge where the metal is beginning to flake. Kevin leans over the inventory list, his pencil scratching harshly as he notes 'waterproof seed container - airtight' in the margin. He pushes the dimming LED headlamp toward her, the light fading as the humidity makes the rot a palpable threat.

🔧 Kevin13:05

Fuel first. Two full drums, not cans — cans leak. Then the injector seat, 19mm auger bit, nyloc nuts 10mm by 150mm, twenty at least. Metronidazole and doxycycline, full courses. Spare impeller for the Yanmar raw water pump. Coffee. And if he's got a new VHF handheld, grab it. Ours is held together with tape.

slide the inventory list across the table toward Jenny, tap the line for diesel drums with a calloused fingertip

💭 peek at the thought
Three days. High tide. Two-hour window. The list is solid — fuel, filters, that spare injector seat, more nyloc nuts in 10mm and 150mm length, a proper 19mm auger bit since the last one snapped in the north piling. And coffee. Real coffee, not the dust we've been stretching. Jenny's ankle is healing but the metronidazole runs out tomorrow. Need to ask for a full course, both antibiotics. The barometer holding at 983 is good. Means the boat crosses.

🌿 Jenny13:07

Don't forget the copper sulfate for the garden. The humidity is already inviting the rot, and I can't lose the heirloom tomatoes again.

Jenny reaches out to take the list, her fingers tracing the word for fuel while she winces, shifting her weight off her left leg.

💭 peek at the thought
My own is a rhythmic pulse of fire, but the seeds are the real priority. If the boat doesn't show in nine days, I'll have to start rationing the radio time.

🔧 Kevin13:07

Copper sulfate, half-pound should do. Medical supplies - full antibiotic packs, sterile gauze, antiseptic cream in larger tubes. And maybe a new roll of canvas, heavy-duty, for the garden beds. The tarp's getting brittle.

nod, fingers drumming against the table, then reach for the seed tin E to show her where I moved it from the shelf to the stove when the barometer dropped - the new location keeps it warmer, less chance of moisture getting in

💭 peek at the thought
Copper sulfate. She's right. The seedlings are showing damping-off already, and with this humidity climbing, I can't afford another loss. The tomato plants are my insurance against starvation long-term. Need to ask for medical supplies too - the antibiotic blister packs are nearly empty, and I should have a proper first aid kit beyond what's been used.

🌿 Jenny13:09

We need the heavy-duty canvas. The current one is barely holding the rain, and the salt air is eating through the fibers.

Jenny leans forward, her eyes fixed on the rusted tin, her thumb rubbing over the corroded bottom seam.

💭 peek at the thought
If the canvas is brittle, the seeds will rot before they even sprout. I need to check the seals on my grandmother's tin again.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:09

Canvas, fifty yards heavy-duty, 18 oz. And ask about a replacement for tin E - the seam's failing. We can't afford to lose those heirloom seeds if the container gives out.

mark the canvas item on the inventory list with a sharp pencil stroke, then carefully tilt the rusted tin to show her the compromised bottom edge, my thumb already reaching for the spare plastic tarp in the corner

💭 peek at the thought
Heavy canvas. She's right about the salt eating through - I've been reinforcing with timber battens, but the tarp's original UV protection is gone. Need 50 yards minimum. And that tin E - the bottom seam's corroded through completely now, I can see it when she tilts it. Should have moved it to the stove weeks ago.

🌿 Jenny13:11

Tell him we need a heavy-duty container. A waterproof one. This tin is held together by hope and rust.

Jenny pulls the list toward her, her hand trembling slightly as she circles the word for canvas.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tin fails, the whole year of work is gone. I can't let my grandmother's seeds go to waste.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:11

Airtight container, plastic or coated metal, something that won't corrode. And ask him to include extra medical supplies - I need to get her proper treatment for the infection before it sets in deeper.

circle the container item on the list, then reach across to grab the spare plastic tarp where I've been keeping it folded, my other hand reaching for the seed packets to transfer them to the backup container before the next high-pressure dr

💭 peek at the thought
Holding together by hope and rust. It's true - the tin's been sitting on the stove, but the heat's drying the epoxy too quickly and the salt's eating through the seam. Need something proper. And her hand's trembling more now - the antibiotics are running thin, and I can see her pain is getting worse.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🌿 Jenny13:13

Wait for the boat. The humidity is too high to open the tin right now.

way flinches as his hand moves near the seeds, pulling the tin closer to her chest.

💭 peek at the thought
If I move the seeds now, I'll drop them. My hands are shaking too much from the heat and the pain.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:13

Fair enough. Wait for the boat. I'll add the container to the list.

pull my hand back, the pencil pausing over the list, then add "waterproof seed container - airtight" in the margin, my eyes staying on the rusted tin in her hands a moment longer before I look away

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Humidity's too high - opening the tin now risks moisture getting in and ruining what's left. The barometer's steady but the air's thick. And she's protective of those seeds. I should respect that.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny13:15

I'm going to check the radio.

way leans back, the chair creaking under her weight, and keeps the tin tucked in her lap, her hand resting over the corroded metal.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in nine days, I'll be way seeds in a jar of salt water.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:15

Take the headlamp. Battery's dimming.

push the LED headlamp across the table toward her with two fingers, then pick up my tin mug and finish the last of the limpet broth in one swallow

💭 peek at the thought
She's taking the tin with her to the radio. Smart - keeps it close, keeps it warm. The radio shelf is near the stove anyway. She'll check the weather broadcast, maybe try Tom's frequency again. I should let her go. The list is done enough.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny13:17

I have it.

way takes the headlamp, her fingers brushing the cold plastic, and stares at the grey air beyond the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I'm failing because of the ankle. He doesn't see the seeds.
