Dock work begins in heavy air

Kevin stands on the dock at high tide, pry bar braced against the fourth plank from the seaward end, the greenheart replacement planks staged beside him. Jenny sits on a crate near the landward end, her ankle propped on a driftwood splint, a steaming basin of salt water and sea beet poultice at her feet. The barometer reads 980 hPa and falling, the sky a uniform grey ceiling, and the shortwave on the cabin porch crackles with static.

Kevin replaced the fourth dock plank with greenheart, drilling and bolting it securely to the sistered knee. Jenny re-dressed her ankle with fresh poultice and gauze, then sketched the new joint while monitoring the rising humidity.

🔧 Kevin14:38

Jenny, I'm starting on the fourth plank now. Get some more clean gauze from the medicine chest when you can reach it.

Pry out the fourth dock plank using the crowbar braced against the rotten section, wheelbarrow loaded with greenheart offcuts toward the staging area.

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure's dropping fast—ninety-eight-zero and still falling. Fourth plank's giving way completely now, rotten right through. Jenny's fever hasn't broken, her ankle still swollen despite the poultice. Need to finish this replacement before the tide turns against the sister joint, before the storm hits for real.

I'll check the kit, but the gauze is under the old linens.

Jenny reaches for the medical box on the table, wincing as the movement throbs through her ankle, and pulls a roll of sterile gauze from the bottom.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping faster than the forecast said; if that rain hits before the dock is secured, the garden will flood again.

Thanks. How's the pain? The poultice is still working, just slow.

💭 peek at the thought
Good, she got what I needed without making a fuss. Her ankle's still puffy despite the poultice, but she's keeping at it. Should check if the infection's improving when she's less tender.

🌿 Jenny14:41

It's manageable, just focus on the wood before the wind shifts.

Jenny rolls the gauze tightly and tosses it toward the dock, eyes tracking the way the greenheart gives way under the pry bar.

💭 peek at the thought
It's a rhythmic pulse, like the tide hitting the pilings, but the heat is what's draining me.

🔧 Kevin14:41

Mortise looks clean. Sister joint held on the third.

Clear the mortise of rot and debris, fit the greenheart replacement plank, drill bolt holes and drive the 150mm stainless through-bolts with washers and nyloc nuts, torque to 35Nm.

💭 peek at the thought
Good throw, better aim. She's watching the work, not the pain. The plank's coming free now — rotten core gives way clean. Need to clear the mortise before the greenheart goes in, and bolt it proper before the next swell.

🌿 Jenny14:43

Make sure the nylocs are tight; the humidity is spiking again.

Jenny leans back against the cottage wall, pulling her sketchbook out to capture the grain of the new plank before it sets.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working fast for once, but the salt air is already eating at that new wood.

🔧 Kevin14:43

Bolts are biting. Nylocs seating.

Drive the 150mm stainless through-bolts through the greenheart plank into the sistered knee, torque each to 35Nm, verify alignment with the existing stringer.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — humidity's climbing, can feel it in the air. Nylocs need to seat clean before the wood swells. Third plank's sister joint held through the last tide cycle, this one will too if the bolts bite proper.

🌿 Jenny14:45

Check the stringer alignment; I don't want an uneven step.

Jenny sketches the joint where the new greenheart meets the old, her pencil scratching quickly against the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
The structure is holding for now, but that barometer is lying to us both.
