Final plank and radio check

Kevin positions the crowbar under the fifth and seaward-most dock plank, the greenheart replacement staged beside him. Jenny sits on the cottage porch step with the shortwave radio, aerial lead in hand, tracing the coax down to the ground stake. The tide is high and slack, the water licking the new planks. Clouds stack low on the horizon, bruised purple-grey. A squall line is visible offshore, moving fast.

The wind shifts to the north, bringing a sudden, heavy humidity that precedes a storm. Jenny leans heavily against the porch railing, her knuckles white as she watches Kevin work to secure the loose dock planks. Kevin grabs the impact driver from the wheelbarrow, the tool clattering as he moves to bolt the greenheart replacement planks into place before the gust picks up.

🌿 Jenny14:49

Kevin, get the impact driver! The wind is turning north and we don't have time for a slow fit.

Stand up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts on my ankle, and grab the porch railing to steady myself.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if that surge hits before the bolts are through, the whole jetty will shear off.

Impact driver's in the wheelbarrow. Hold the radio — I'll get this seated before the gust hits.

Pull the crowbar free, drop it in the wheelbarrow, grab the impact driver and 19mm socket, move to the seaward plank.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the wind shift. The squall's moving faster than the barometer said. Last plank, then secure everything.

🌿 Jenny14:51

Watch the alignment, Kevin! The wood is slick from the spray!

Step out to the edge of the dock, keeping my ankle elevated, and hold the radio antenna high to catch way signal is left through the static.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast; the greenheart is heavy and he'll cross the threads if the wind catches.

🔧 Kevin14:51

Stay on the porch. I've got the alignment.

Line up the greenheart plank against the stringer, check the bolt holes match the sister plate, start the first 150mm through-bolt by hand to catch threads clean.

💭 peek at the thought
She's on the dock edge with a bad ankle in rising wind. One gust, one slip — she goes in. But she's holding the aerial for the radio check we need.

🌿 Jenny14:53

way it, Kevin! The barometer is screaming at 980!

Lean against the cottage wall, watching the water lap against the new pilings, clutching the radio in my good hand.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually threading them by hand— good, but the tide is rising too fast for a slow start.

🔧 Kevin14:53

Heard it. Last bolt going home now.

Drive the second 150mm through-bolt, torque both to 35Nm with the impact driver, check plank sits flush and true, then gather tools into wheelbarrow.

💭 peek at the thought
980 and falling fast. She's not leaving the wall. Good. Last bolt, torque it, then get her inside before the front hits.
