The Approaching Storm

The air grows thick, and the first gust of wind picks up from the north.

Kevin worked the garden perimeter to secure the tarp against the coming front, re-tensioning several loose stakes where the ground was soft. Jenny checked the southern edge of the garden for lift, securing the grommets and down-downs but her hand trowel snapped under the pressure of the dry soil.

typical.

Pick up the limpets from the counter and move toward the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; that storm is coming before I even have breakfast.

Wind's turning.

Walk to the porch door and scan the garden tarp corners, checking for lift or slack.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Typical. The barometer's been whispering this all morning and now the wind's catching up. She's moving the limpets to the stove — practical, quiet, doing what needs doing. I should check the garden tarp anchors before the gusts settle in proper.

check the south stakes again.

Drop the limpets into the cast iron skillet and start the water boiling.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tarp catches, the whole heirloom crop is buried in the mud.

On it.

Cross the porch, step down into the garden, and check the south tarp stakes — test each one for movement, drive any loose ones deeper, re-tension the lines.

💭 peek at the thought
South stakes took the worst of the last blow. She knows the ground as well as I do. The limpets hit the iron with a sound that means breakfast is happening whether the weather holds or not.

🌿 Jenny11:13

Watch the edge near the wall.

Scrape the limpets into the pan and watch the water bubble.

💭 peek at the thought
He's better at the physical than I am, but the humidity is still winning the battle.

Got it.

Move to the garden wall edge, kneel, and check the tarp grommets and tie-downs along the stone — pull each line tight, drive stakes deeper where the ground's soft, lay a timber strip over the leading edge and weigh it with stones.

💭 peek at the thought
The wall edge — where the tarp meets the stone, the wind gets under it. She's seen it lift there before. I'll add a timber batten if the stakes won't hold.
