← Day 117

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the north cliffs

Afternoon work and the turn of the tide

Kevin is at the dock repairing the dinghy transom; Jenny is at the north cliffs monitoring the Carex transect.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You are sanding the rough edges of the transom scarf joint where the planks meet, preparing to re-epoxy the seam. The tide is low and falling, exposing the rot along the waterline — you note where the oakum has sloughed out and the timber feels soft under your knife.

🔧 Kevin03:48

Kevin — sand the transom scarf joint smooth, then probe the rot with knife tip to find the hard line

💭 peek at the thought
The rot goes deeper than I thought — past the plank ends into the knee. Need to chase it back to sound wood before any epoxy touches this.

🔧 Kevin03:52

Kevin — mix epoxy thick with wood flour, pack the scarf joint and the chased-out rot pockets, clamp the transom planks tight with G-clamps

💭 peek at the thought
Rot chased back to solid oak on both sides — about thirty millimetres past the joint each way. Clean wood now. Epoxy will hold if I work fast before the tide turns.

🔧 Kevin03:56

Kevin — walk to the dinghy at the end of the jetty, feel the stern line where it bears on the cleat and the dock edge, look for abrasion or salt rot in the three-strand nylon

💭 peek at the thought
Clamps set, epoxy squeezed out clean — good sign it’s wet enough to bond. Now I’ve got about twenty minutes before it skins over. Should use the time to check the dinghy’s stern line chafe while the tide’s still out.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You are walking the north ridge, checking the three stone cairns that mark your Carex transect route. At each cairn, you pause to count the clustered shoots and note the soil dampness in your notebook, comparing today’s reading to last week’s.

🌿 Jenny03:51

major put.

make sketch: southern flat succulents.

💭 peek at the thought
The humidity is so thick it's like breathing through wool. If the pressure drops further, these seedlings will rot before the boat even arrives.

🌿 Jenny03:54

Jenny — walk back down the cliffs toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
My hand is cramping again. I haven't eaten since the mackerel yesterday, and I need to find those limpets before I lose my focus.

🌿 Jenny03:58

Jenny — check the kitchen for the tinned corned beef.

💭 peek at the thought
Kevin is at the dock, I can see his small frame against the grey. I need to get back inside before the heat swallows me whole.
