Shelter from the storm

The rain continues at a steady roar as evening falls. You and Jenny gather by the stove, waiting for the barometer to stabilize.

Kevin and Jenny stand in the kitchen at the old shrine as the pressure continues to drop. They share mugs of coffee and feel the weight of the approaching storm while the supply boat is three days away.

🌿 Jenny10:44

The barometer's holding at 976. It's not dropping anymore, at least.

Lean against the counter and rub my stomach, looking at Kevin.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is so thick I can almost taste the salt and the wet stone. I'm starving, and the silence between us is heavier than the rain.

Holding's better than falling.

pour two mugs of coffee from the pot on the stove, set one in front of her without looking at her face

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching me. Not the barometer. The rain's loud enough to cover anything I don't say. My chest's tight — not the water this time. Just the weight of what's not between us.

🌿 Jenny10:46

Thanks.

Wrap both hands around the warm mug and take a slow sip, watching the steam rise.

💭 peek at the thought
He does this—the small, mechanical gestures of care—while keeping the actual person at arm's length. It's efficient. It's lonely.

🔧 Kevin10:46

Storm's passed over us. Barometer holding. We'll know by morning if it's truly done.

stir my coffee slow, eyes on the swirl, not on her face, and listen to the rain on the roof — steady, not worsening

💭 peek at the thought
Her hands are steady. Mine aren't. I keep thinking about the spar split at the mast step — how we left it drying in the wool box instead of fixing it. Like we're waiting for permission to be broken.

🌿 Jenny10:48

I didn't plant them today. The seeds. I was too... I don't know. I just couldn't.

Set the mug down on the counter with a small clink and look at him, waiting for him to look back.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about the weather because it's the only thing we both agree on. I can't do another night of just talking about the barometer.

🔧 Kevin10:48

You don't have to explain it. I know what it feels like when the weight sits in your chest and you can't move.

set my mug down, turn fully to face her, and reach across the counter to cover her hands with mine — warm, damp, real — and hold them without speaking until she pulls away or stays

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking for forgiveness. She's waiting to see if I'll make it about the seeds — or if I'll see her.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny10:50

Jenny — stay still, letting him hold my hands, and lean my forehead against his shoulder.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually seeing me. Not the botanist, not the caretaker, just me. I want to pull away because it's too much, but I'm too tired to be alone right now.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:50

I'm here. We're both here.

wrap my arms around her slow, one hand at the back of her head, the other flat against her spine, and just breathe with her — counting the seconds so I don't lose them

💭 peek at the thought
This is the closest we've been in weeks. Her breath hot through my shirt. The rain still falling. I should say something — about the seeds, about the storm, about the supply boat that's three days late — but my throat's closed around all of it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:52

Don't let go yet.

Close my eyes and press my face into the fabric of his shirt, breathing in the scent of grease and salt.

💭 peek at the thought
This is the first time in months I haven't felt like I was drifting a few feet away from everything. I can hear his heart; it's the only thing on this island that isn't rhythmic like the tide.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:52

I won't.

hold her tighter, face buried in her hair, and let the silence stretch — no counting, no planning, no fixing — just the two of us standing in the kitchen while the rain falls and the barometer holds at 976

💭 peek at the thought
My chest cracks open. Not the water. Not the storm. Her. All the months I've been quiet, waiting for her to ask me to stay, waiting for me to ask her — and she just did, without words.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:54

Jenny — squeeze him back, my fingers clutching the back of his shirt, and let out a long, shuddering breath.

💭 peek at the thought
I can feel the tension leaving my shoulders. It's terrifying, how quickly I can forget the distance between us when he does this.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:54

Nothing. Not yet. There's no words for this.

stay exactly where I am, arms locked around her, letting the stove's warmth and her weight against me and the rain on the roof be the only things that exist — and for the first time in eleven months, not thinking about what comes next

💭 peek at the thought
She's shaking. Or I am. Doesn't matter. The wall I built between us — every unspoken thing, every meal eaten in silence, every night I turned my back — it's gone. Washed away like the garden wall the first storm took.
